[Champion Concept] Celeste, the Yordle Astronomer

EnvyDragon·6/8/2014, 4:48:56 PM·21 votes·4,892 views

An academic with a fondness for the sky and all the things in it, Celeste decided at an early age that she would be the one to fix the Mothership in Bandle City once and for all. Unfortunately, with the entire world seemingly revolving around the Institute of War, she found her work and research constantly overshadowed by those scientists with more, er, combat-oriented fields of focus - Heimerdinger and Ziggs and the like.

In a desperate attempt to finally earn some grant money, she's picked up her Hextelescope and set out for the Fields of Justice. Still somewhat of a hesitant fighter, she nevertheless discovered rather quickly that space is full of things that are really good at hurting people. Summoning stars, comets and all manner of other space debris, Celeste will prove once and for all that she is the BEST AT SPACE.

This kit is a work-in-progress and will be updated with pictures and whatnot over time.

###Kit

Innate: Space Junk

Every time Celeste kills a minion, autoattacks a champion, or lands a critical hit, a Star Bit appears at that location. Star Bits enhance Celeste's spells and last for 20 seconds.

Q: Lonely Rolling Star

Celeste launches a miniature sun in a straight line, dealing magic damage to targets in its path. Each enemy target or Star Bit it connects with increases its size and damage by 10%, and its range by 50. Star Bits collected in this way are consumed.

The miniature sun stuns targets for 0.25 seconds. Every 6 size increases extend the stun duration by 0.25 seconds.

Initial Range: 500

Mana Cost: 70/80/90/100/110

Cooldown: 10/9/8/7/6

Initial Damage: [low flat damage] + [0.5ish AP ratio] (values TBD)

Initial Width: 60

W: Gravity Well

Passive: Every third consecutive autoattack summons a comet to the target location, dealing bonus magic damage based on Celeste's Ability Power and spawning a Star Bit.

Active: Celeste generates a moving field of gravity at the target location, spawning 1/1/2/2/3 Star Bits at its center and drawing in those nearby as well. Star bits are drawn in faster the closer they are to the center of the effect. Activating the ability again selects a new destination for the Gravity Well to move toward (a la Viktor ult).

The Gravity Well lasts 2/3/4/5/6 seconds.

Passive damage ratio: 0.2/0.25/0.3/0.35/0.4

Range: 600

Gravity Well movement speed: 300/320/340/360/380

Gravity Well radius: 150 (equal to Urgot's E radius for example)

Mana Cost: 50/55/60/65/70

Cooldown: 16/14/12/10/8

E: Pulsar Burst

Celeste lobs a high-energy star toward the target location. When it lands, it draws in all nearby Star Bits and consumes them. Then, after a 0.5 delay (during which it broadcasts its damage radius via visual effects) it explodes, dealing magic damage.

Every Star Bit consumed increases the damage dealt by 8% and the damage radius by 25. Each Star Bit consumed also causes the Pulsar Burst to reduce enemy armor and magic resistance by 2/3/4/5/6 for 3 seconds.

Range: 750

Star Bit draw-in distance: 250

Initial blast radius: 150

Damage: [low flat damage] + [0.6ish AP ratio?] (values TBD, but higher than Q due to predictability)

Cooldown: 14/12/10/8/6

Mana Cost: 50/60/70/80/90

R: Deep Impact

A flurry of small meteors impact randomly within the target area, dealing magic damage when they land and leaving Star Bits behind. After 3 seconds, a massive asteroid impacts directly in the center, dealing magic damage and stunning targets immediately at its landing site for 1.5 seconds.

Area of Effect: 550

Mini-meteor damage: [very low flat damage] + [0.15ish AP ratio?] (values TBD)

Asteroid (finisher) damage: [massive flat damage] + [1.0ap ratio probably] (values TBD)

Mini-meteors summoned: 12/16/20

Mana Cost: 100/100/100

Cooldown: 140/115/90

###Playstyle

Celeste is a control mage whose abilities are mostly gated based on how many Star Bits she can get in play. As her main method of summoning Star Bits is through autoattacks, and her abilities gain utility in addition to damage from Bits, she can effectively be built pure AP, on-hit builds, or even in a weird Kog'maw-esque Marksman way - crits get Bits, so she can follow up a flurry of attacks with a Q stun or an E nuke with little trouble.

Her weaknesses include a lack of burst, and an almost complete inability to answer short-range aggression; while her abilities are somewhat spammable, they don't do a lot without the Bits to back them up. She needs that setup time to really become beastly.

###Coming soon!

I must say, I am very impressed with this concept. I love the star bits (reminds me of innocence and yordle-like traits as well) and their interaction with the kit. However, their are in some faults in your stars (hehe).

Gravity Well has some nice interaction with how it draws in star bits, allowing for a well-placed ult and pulsar burst to go off in tandem for tons of damage. However, you will need to elaborate on how it draws Champions in.

Is there a point where MS outpaces the pull, or is the enemy simply rooted and drawn in?

The ultimate has RNG similar to Gangplank's ult, which I feel gimps it. Making the meteorites land in a pattern so the enemy can act accordingly. Don't change El Meteor Grande.

Your passive needs to be re-named lol.

Err, there's not a lot I can find wrong with this concept. You do need to have more stuff available when you make the original post. A personal preference of mine, but I hate it when people say something along the lines of (more coming soon, art, lore ect.)No one knows this concept is happening yet, we can wait. At least have the quotes done, they don't take as long.

It's a shame you don't have everything ready yet now, the kit is brilliant.

Just some thoughts...

Very interesting ideas behind the concept, though the numbers could definitely use a lot of tweaking. But numbers are a secondary concern; what matters is the function.

One thing you need to ask yourself when making a concept is not just "will this be fun to play?", but also "will this be too hard to play against?". In its present state, Celeste looks like she'd be extremely frustrating to play against and hard to counter. One problem is that it's too easy for her to generate loads of Star Bits (which is very neat mechanic, by the way). She should need to work more for it.

I recommend changing one of her skills (maybe her Q) to a simple skill-shot that generates a Star Bit on hit. That way, you have much more of a skill gate to contend with. Additionally, the star bits last way too long; try and compare them with Syndra's Orbs (which last 6-8 seconds).

Cooldowns are another thing to concern yourself with. Think about how much craziness you can create when you get 40% CDR, and ensure that opponents won't be left with zero opportunities to counterplay.

There's a lot more to look at, but this should get you started. Balancing out a Champion isn't easy, and you may have to cut away things you like, but if it means making a Champion Concept that Riot could just pick up and go with, it can be worth the loss.

You could also have a look at some of my works for some pointers. I've been making concepts since the open Beta (look up Alice, the Doll Master), and I basically have learned a lot through practice.

Here are links to some of my current stuff:

Nephree, the Dark Crusader

Ritz, the Princess of Thieves

Gobomba, the Voodoo Idol

Vulfeynnax, the Tyrant Dragon

They might not have some kooky unique mechanic behind them, but they are built solid.

I hope to see this one improve in the future. It's very novel.

This is pretty good, though Gravity Well feels pretty weird. It's a high mindshare ability, as mechanically mechanically complex as Viktor ult. But it doesn't do damage, or indeed have any direct effect at all? It's powerful, certainly. Ult, then vacuum up the star bits for a teamfight-wide AOE burst of damage that also drops everyone's armor and MR into the negatives. But it's extremely hard to use for an ability that does nothing on its own. Compare it to Zyra W, for instance.

That said, this does an excellent job at expressing the theme mechanically.

Great Idea so far! I love the concept and a new Yordle would be awesome. Here's my thoughts so far...

Passive: I really love this mechanic, though after looking at some of the other comments I do have to agree it seems like it is a bit difficult to play against. I feel that reducing the time the bits are around would make her feel too much like syndra however. Instead I'd recommend reducing the impact each bit has on the spell. This would help to keep her mechanic unique without making her overpowered. Another idea is that maybe the star bits should be targetable by enemy champions, allowing them to deny her their use.

Q "Lonely Rolling Star": Another cool idea. Again though, the potential for such an infinite range is rather overpowered. Perhaps instead of each star bit collected adding to the range of the ability, they sort of 'refresh' the range. This may require the initial range and 'extension' distance to be rethought. Let's say that the initial range is 200 and each bit would add up to 100 to the range, just for the sake of numbers. Picking up a bit before or at 100 units would have no effect on the range, but picking up a bit at 150 units would 'refresh' the range, allowing it to travel to 250. This means in order to get truly massive ranges, a trail of star bits would need to be created, as opposed to just a big lump the star can roll over.

W "Gravity Well": I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Yes, it's good for her that she can move the bits, but again, as another commenter said, "how hard is this to play against?" With the way you have the star bits affecting abilities now, the ability to cluster up all the star bits and drop a big spell is really going to provide a huge burst of damage. Too much, I'd say. Use the field as a powerful slow perhaps, but repositioning the bits may give her a bit too much of an advantage. It negates the need to set up in an area before being able to do damage, which is her whole concept.

Also, on the passive part of her W. I really do think this is a good idea, having a consistent way for her to generate the bits is important. I do have a question though, by "third consecutive auto attack" do you mean on one target, like Vayne's Silver Bolts? Or is it on any targets, so long as you don't cast a spell in between them? Or will casting a spell even cancel the stacks at all? Think carefully about the implications each choice could have. item 3085

E "Pulsar Burst": I really think this one is very well thought out. My only real comment is that perhaps the impact of each star bit should be reduced. Remember, you said yourself that she'd be going for quantity of bits over quality of placement. That would mean she could rather easily grab lots of bits with this skill.

R "Deep Impact": I love this one. Even the RNG. Yeah, it sucks, but it adds an element of unpredictability that's exciting. Others have commented that there should be a pattern or to just remove the small meteors. I disagree. I'm sure that Riot would require that there be an animated border around the area where the small meteors can fall, like Gangplank's ultimate. I'd also like to see this skill have some sort of interaction with the star bits. It's a shame that the mechanic is left totally by the wayside for this skill.

OH! Mid-writing thought. Perhaps the mini-meteors could target star bits that exist within the selected area? Perhaps increasing their damage?

Overall, great idea, and I look forward to seeing more! And Congrats on getting attention from not just one, but two Rioters!

Possible Quotes! I imagine she would sound a bit dreamy like Lulu, but more space-themed. Imagine if Lulu found the Space Personality Core from Portal 2 instead of Pix.

General Quotes

  • "Not even the sky is the limit!"
  • "Infinite stars, infinite possibilities!"
  • "To boldly go where no-one has gone before! I totally made that one myself."

  • "Can you imagine what we could find?"
  • "There's 'space' for us all up there! Hah!"
  • "Hah! You just got spaced!"
  • "The stars don't favour you today, do they?"

Taunts

  • "See that shape in the stars? It means you're in for a world of hurt!"
  • "In space, no one can hear you scream. But I still can!"

I think her ultimate should apply some slow effect or something of the kind. Otherwise the giant meteor is pretty much useless. It'd be like trying to hit someone with Dark Matter before using Event Horizon. It's not impossible, but depends much more on enemy error than actual skill of the caster. Specially considering she lacks any form of cc on her other skills.

I've played this game for almost 5 years and I've read a lot of fan creations, and I have to say yours is one of the more unique not broken champ ideas that would give the more inclined players a fun challenge to master, best of luck to you and your creation, I hope they make it into a playable champ.

Jingerbeardman6/9/2014, 10:52:48 PM1 votes

I have a hard time really seeing this champ working well. Her Q for one is currently capable of going on forever and increasing in power to easily. It would have to have a cap. Same goes for Star bits, there could only be so many on the field at one time. Otherwise pulsar blast would be 100 to 0 ing everyone it came in contact with.

I enjoy the ingenuity of the ideas and how they work together. I am simply having a hard time seeing them work in the game though. My recommendation for you would be to try and define the abilities more when there is a very limited amount of star bits that could be on the field at one time.
