(Champion Concept) Garfield, the Driller

Alright so this idea was inspired by the show Gurren Lagann. A champion who fights with a drill that can get underneath his opponents and pop them up, knock them aside, blow the bits and all kinds of nonsense.

Edit Driller's Passion: Basic attacks and spell casts generate Heat, causing his attacks to deal 0.2% bonus damage per unit of heat, up to 20%. Basic attacks generate 5 heat.

Edit Q:Drill bit: Basic attacks reduce targets' Armor by 3/4/5/6/7%, stacking up to four times. Active: Next basic attack deals 5/25/45/65/85 (+20% bonus AD) bonus physical damage and gains 6/12/18/24/30 additional flat Armor Penetration.

New W:Shattered Earth: Garfield spikes his drill into the ground cause a cone area in front of him to crumble dealing 30/55/80/105/130 (+50% Bonus Attack Damage) physical damage those hit. Enemies walking through the Shattered Earth have movement speed reduced by 15/20/25/30/35% for 1 second. Cost 20 heat

Edit E:Dig Dig Dig: Garfield digs underground and moves where he pleases for 2 seconds, causing debris to fly around where he moves. Garfield deals 80/135/190/245/300 (+40% Bonus Attack Damage) physical damage over the duration of the ability. After 2 seconds, Garfield bursts out from the ground in his current location and knocks nearby enemies back slightly. Cost 20 heat

Edit R:Drill to the Heavens!: Garfield fires his drill in a line piercing enemies and pulling them into the drill path dealing 200/300/400 (+70% bonus Attack Damage) physical damage. No Cost

This is a very rough draft. Came up with this at work and will make it more complete later in the day; hence why I do not have any scaling on the abilities just yet. I'm imagining this character to be over the top with speech (like Kamina in Gurren Lagann) but a yordle similar to Ziggs. Of course that's just my vision but I'd like opinions on the skills (again work in progress with ratios) and even character design suggestions. Maybe you have an idea that works better with this character type.

Edit/Update

I'm really appreciating your feedback. Now that I have internet at my place I can put some good attention to this. I really agree with the idea that 4sura suggested for the Passive and Q mechanics and going to work out some figures to see the potential in them. Also possibly making Dig Dig Dig the new ultimate and if so this is what it would roughly be (currently marking down some numbers).

Edit 2

Changed Dig Dig Dig above to be a normal spell similar to Vladimir's without the slow. Debating if I like it better as a regular skill (above) or as an ultimate (below). If it is an ultimate, then going through the some ideas, I was thinking maybe a skill shot that shoots a drill in a line dealing damage to the first target hit. Can cast when overheated for bonus damage or something. Just laying foundations before I settle on putting up numbers.

Dig Dig Dig: Garfield digs underground and moves where he pleases for 3 seconds, causing debris to fly around where he moves. Enemies hit by debris take physical damage. After 3 seconds, Garfield bursts out from the ground in his current location and knocks enemies back and dealing x/x/x physical damage to all enemies in surrounding area.

Also, I'm not too happy with the name I picked personally but I used it for now as to not let him go nameless.

League of Leggends needs more funny champions.

I like the concept of a champion fighting with a drill. I like the reuse of the heat resource.

I regret to say, however, that the overall implementation seems kind of bland.

Drill Bit: This should be more than just a passive ability. I don't have any strong suggestions for what the active should be. Maybe just a boosted melee damage attack.

Tunnel Travel: The theme of this ability is very good. I just want to make sure your implementation is clear. Do you intend for him to be visible/invisible, targetable/untargetable while tunneling? How quickly will he tunnel? Will it be clear where he's going to pop up?

Dig Dig Dig: I actually think this should be his ultimate. Make it a little stronger to compensate. Make it a channel akin to Nunu's except dealing damage during the channel and having a small (or no) effect if the channel goes to full duration.

Drill to the Heavens!: The reason I prefer Dig Dig Dig as his ultimate is that I don't think he needs two gap closers. It seemed excessive.

That leaves him with one non-ulti ability which I think could safely be a bit of ranged utility. Have him spray machine oil or something and create a slow field.

Love TTGL and the references are a bit enjoyable, but you're kind of walking the fine line between "homage" and "crutch". The character seems less like "A league champion who is a tribute to TTGL" and more akin to "A TTGL tribute in the forum of a League character" (if such a phrase makes sense).

In terms of kit, while I won't say anything about heat because I'm not a fan of most resource mechanics outside of energy/mana, you kind of have a very binary and bland kit. Which isn't bad per say, as it does what it sets out to do. You also have some questionable stuff, such as...

  • Is Dig a channeled skill that constantly throws out boulders or is this just a one time, instant skill?

  • Is he meant to obtain heat or is he meant to avoid it? Your kit is kind of confusing in the sense that some skills take away heat but he builds heat. Should kind of be one or the other as opposed to both.

  • His passive is nearly identical to Rumbles, so how would you go about changing it so that he's a bit more unique?

  • What is the scaling on his abilities at a glance (High, low, medium, etc) and do you forsee him being an initiator? Tanky bruiser? Ability ADC?

You definitely put a good bit of passion into your concept and there's definitely some stuff that's worth exploring in this kit. You just need to work on it a little more. Don't feel upset though, nobody ever starts with a kit you can submit for creation right off the bat.

As for the name? Might want a yordle-y name that "sounds" like it belongs to the furry little gits. (Rumble, Ziggs, Teemo, Heimerdinger, names like that).

These are my thoughts on the matter:

The damage gained from the passive is pretty irrelevant going into the lategame -- it should have some form of scaling on it.

Driller's Passion -- Basic attacks and spell casts generate Heat, causing his attacks to deal 0.2% bonus damage per unit of heat, up to 20%. Basic attacks generate 5 heat.

Q is simply not powerful enough! Compare it to Vi's Denting Blows. Something like this would preserve the idea and pack a bit more punch.

Q -- Drill Bit -- Passive: Basic attacks reduce targets' Armor by 3/4/5/6/7%, stacking up to four times. Active: Next basic attack deals 5/25/45/65/85 (+20% bonus AD) bonus physical damage and gains 6/12/18/24/30 additional flat Armor Penetration.

W seems silly in that it's a gap closer that knocks targets away from him. I think it should deal damage along the line he travels, as that would be more consistent with the flavor.

I love this idea :D Rammus lovers may have a prob with it XD I'm a Raammus lover but it would be awesome to have a champion like that, he could be related to Rammus or be from the same area or whatever. Btw WHEN IS VEL KOZ COMING OUT!

I posted an idea for a champion awhile ago and I would've continued developing him but I can't post discussions anymore for some reason. I haven't settled on a name yet but his last name thing would be the builder of Demacia or the Demacian wall builder. I want him to be a pure defensive champion with the ability to build defensive walls and fortresses like a support type champion would do. His ultimate could be building a fortress around a champion or champions and they would heal as they were in it for a few seconds, tey would always be invisible while this effect took place. Certain other powers like blocking walls and stuff would be in his list but whatever, let me know what you think.

Made some changes to the original kit. Removed Tunnel Travel and replaced it with Shattered Earth and have added some scaling ratios (tentative) for the abilities. Cooldowns should be low to moderate overall since building heat will help improve your damage output but overheating will silence you (just like Rumble).

Also can't decide on a name and can't change the title of this post so here's a list so far for names:

  • Garfield (current)
  • Monterrey
  • Dale
  • Simon
  • Scrap
