In The Beginning
Runeterra was a nation torn by war, ravaged by misuse of arcane magic, and radically diverse in people and geography. There was the Demacian utopia of virtue and justice led by paragons worthy of the title contrasted by a Zaunite gutter land, filled with the insane and unclean. Some factions were relatively unknown, like the Stanpar of Mount Targon. The Freljord was just a place, as was the Kumungu Jungle and the Shadow Isles. There were pirates, wizards, valorous knights, unsightly mongrels, and below all these things were monsters.
The Void.
The Void was the beginning. In the void, magic happened. Where else would normal human beings learn to wield energies as a weapon? Where else would animals become sentient, Yordles rise from the dead, or creatures be summoned from other worlds?
The Void was the catalyst of a new order in Runeterra. Eons before the founding of the League and its subsequent disappearance, lifetimes before any mortal being remembers, the Void began a subtle march to domination.
Having shaped the world of Runeterra from its own nothingness, the Void sought to inspire creation and strength! Shurima rose from the sands, opposite the Frejlord from the snow. In opposite corners of a land bereft of life, the frozen tundras and scorching dunes gave birth to staggering power. Their success, however, was muted by their distance. What power does one wield if it has no one to wield it against?
And so they faded.
Some time after, the Void tried again to reanimate a world now populated by creatures of magic without guidance. Strength was the sole factor of rule, and so it created Noxus. Dominance by force. When it realized that strength was not the only means of control, it created something to balance the tyrannical ideals of Noxus- Demacia. In Demacia it had found a yin to the Noxian yang, but it had not found balance. And so, to give the two something to fight for, the Void gave Runeterra a land of idyllic peace and freedom. Ionia balanced two sides of a volatile coin. Other nations sprang from the land, but Demacia and Noxus stood as two pillars of civilization and barbarism, splendor and glory among squalor and filth. With the creation of Ionia, the Void finished directly influencing the world. It waited.
It watched.
