How do teams get selected for worlds?

I have been trying to read up on MSI and worlds, as I am interested in the selection process, however I have been very confused about it. It is very confusing and I cannot understand how MSI affects it. If someone can clear this up for me it would be a great help! Thanks in advance! :)

MSI - The Winner of each regions finals.

NA EU Korea China Taiwan Wildcard - (Ex - Brazil and Russia)

So the 4 regions that advance to the playoffs of MSI get #1 seeded teams for Worlds

Last Year KR, NA, China, and Taiwan all advanced while EU and WCL both excited before playoffs so KR/NA/China/Tai get to have there top world team be seeded into the 1 slot.

Last Years worlds sent:

Na - TSM(1), CLG,(2), C9 (3) Eu - G2(1), H2K(2), Spy (3) KR - Rox(1), SKT(2), SSG(3) China - EDG(1), RNG(2), I-May (3) Tai - FW (1), AHQ (2) WCL - ANX, ITZ

So Group A was Rox (KR -1), CLG(NA -2), G2 (Eu -1), and ANX (WCL)

Group B: EDG (CH -1) , H2K(EU -2), AHQ (Tai -2) and ITZ (WCL)

Group C: TSM (Na -1) , SSG (KR -3), RNG (Ch -2) and Spy (Eu - 3)

Group D: FW (Tai -1), SKT (KR -2), C9 (NA-3) and Imay (CH -3)

To get into those groups a random draw took place

The following teams were the 4 1 seeds Rox, TSM, FW, and EDG

The following teams where 2 seeds G2, CLG, H2K, SKT, SSG, AHQ, IMay, RNG

The following teams where 3 seeds C9, Spy, ITZ, ANX

-Based on MSI NA, KR, CH, and Tai got to have their top teams be grouped in the 1 seed slot. -Based on MSI EU's top 2 teams where placed in the 2 seed slot. -Korea and China's 2nd and 3rd best teams also place in the 2 seed slot. -The 2nd Taiwan team is also placed in the 2 seed slot -Wild Card teams are always both placed in the 3 seed slot -NA and EU's 3rd best team are always placed in the 3 seed slot. -Each group has one 1 seeded team, two 2 seeded teams, and one 3 seeded team.

I do think this years worlds may be different as far as placement, but for the most part years past as been that way I've discribed except having MSI impact the Worlds seeding. It used to be NA, Eu, KR, and Ch all had it's best teams as a 1 seed and Taiwan had both its teams as a 2 seed.

This year apperently will be vastly different from years past though.

Heres a link that should explain it well. http://www.lolesports.com/en_US/articles/2017-world-championship-update

Hazeyo pretty much gave you the overall gist of the selection process for last year's worlds. As far as we're concerned, MSI's results only affect which minor (wildcard) region is granted an additional slot for their region along with the general selection from last year. As a result, this would put that region's #1 seed directly into the group stage while the #2 seed in the play in with the other competing teams.
