If you say the America’s that typically means north and South America.

North America is compromised of many country’s as is South America. However when you say what is America or who is America etc with no plural, that means the United States. It’s the reason why when you visit a different country even in canada or Mexico they say oh your an American. And they are referred to as Mexican or canadian from those similar states as well... if you visit Germany and you are Mexican, and are from Mexico, you don’t say I am from America, you say you are from Mexico, they can however say they are from North America or the America’s....
