While Maw and gage do share the same CDR and shield it's dmg/mr item for Renekton. One has to remember "tank" item 3065 over item 3156 //item 3155 for Renekton isn't all that great as he falls off late game if he doesn't have 90/10 in dmg.
Impact built item 3053 around the 38 min mark?(Don't remember) just for the tenacity buff. IDK. Not the best combo those items but the only option for Renekton I suppose.

I think it's safe to assume he's aware of the interaction and values the stats over the lifeline.
