Expansion Tournament Format Suggestions (TLDR: Double Elimination)
With the 2015 season expanding to ten teams, I feel like a double elimination format (that is, with a loser's bracket) would be the fairest and most accurate way to add two new teams to the League. Assuming a knockout-stage bracket format – at least at the end of the tournament – it's entirely feasible that the two best teams could meet in the semi- or quarterfinals, denying at least one team from an LCS spot. With a loser bracket, the second-best team still has a chance at getting the second slot.
I'm guessing Riot is afraid of having the Expansion Tournament be too big, for fear of having it overshadow the Promotion Tournament or the regular season games. But even so, an Expansion Tournament is like a microcosmic Challenger Series in and of itself, and should be open to a decent number of teams - not just the losers of the Promotion Tournaments. A double elimination format would be compact in terms of the number of games played, while still allowing the best teams to rise to the top and reducing the chance of fluke results.
PS: If you have to give special treatment to the losers of the Promotion Tournament, give them a bye out of a round or two in our theoretical format. That would leave room for the top ten challenger 5v5 ladder teams, plus the 3 losers. I tried to make a picture to illustrate but I have a headache and messed up somewhere, but hopefully you get the point (it's just attached because I don't know how to embed attached images, I hope you like my MSpaint skillz).
PPS: Please no more best-of-ones.
