Hey everyone,

Every so often at Riot, we run an internal 48-hour hackathon called Thunderdome. Last year, Team Player Voted Content (PVC) built and shipped an unofficial minigame, Ziggs Arcade Blast. We were super excited to see many of you participating in the discussion, giving your input during development, and ultimately enjoying the game!

This year, we’re getting the gang back together—plus a few more—for one last hurrah, and to mark the occasion… we wanna go bigger.

Presenting JAM PACKED: 3 teams. 3 minigames. 48 hours. And we need your help.

(Almost) anything goes. No restrictions on engine, platform or genre. Discord shitposting. And a whole lot of caffeine.

We’re gonna take you along every step of the way, but first, we need your input! Below you’ll see a list of themes in the League universe. Vote on your favorite, and the top 3 will be used to make the upcoming minigames. Voting will close on March 9 @ midday PST.

Big disclaimers so I don’t get in trouble: Typically the goal of Thunderdome projects isn't to ship something to the public, and it's important to note that this isn’t the team’s main goal either. We want to focus on openly sharing the dev process with everyone. This will likely be the last time we ship something directly from a Thunderdome team, so let’s go out with a jam.

These games, unlike League of Legends, Blitzcrank’s Poro Roundup, Mechs vs Minions, etc., are NOT official Riot products. When and if we get them into your hands, they’re probably going to be buggy, janky and unfinished, but we’re aiming to share them anyway. We cool? We cool.

Here's an Idea for an Omega Squad mode.

5 man free for all, permadeath.
Each player is randomly assigned Teemo, Tristana, Fizz, Veigar, or Twitch.
The map is a big old patch of jungle, with line of sight blockers, bushes, patches of swamp, and plants all over.
You can only buy completed items. You start out with two complete items and upgraded boots.
Each kill nets you one more complete item, but you have to find a shop in the jungle to cash in.
Powerful monsters roam the jungle, and attack on sight.

Last man standing wins.

Whoah there. We maybe did a poor job of explaining the plan - these aren't game modes of League we're making, they're stand-alone mini-games like Ziggs Arcade Blast. We won't be working within the League of Legends engine.

That'd bring a lot of risk that would be tricky to cover in 48hrs!

Thats great to hear actually. I really enjoyed minigames from the past. Cho eats the world is my fav. I would love to play a game with Pentakill characters. Is it possible to create a game, where you play as Pentakill member which have to play notes to purge evil yordles with power of metal?

Of course it's possible - but first it needs to be in the top three of the votes, and the JamPacked sub-team who is assigned it needs to (conferring with players, perhaps) decide whether or not that's the minigame they want to try to make AND they need to have a reasonable expectation of being able to do it.

For example - it could totally be a game mode where you have to kick and endless stream of Teemo's off a mountain to the time of the music. Pretty easy. But the team might decide to go with the platform rhythm game (like Doozku mentioned) instead. Or a dating sim. Or a clicking game. Or something ENTIRELY different.

Unlikely they'll be able to do, like an MMO, or a giant multiplayer FPS, or a deep and nuanced RPG in the time. That'd be... challenging.

There are a lot of options right now. Just keep in mind mini game, and 48 hrs, and you shouldn't go wrong.

Well first, Omega Squad would need to be in the top three. But something of that scale (if you mean Doom (1993), not Doom (2016)) could be do-able. Doom-able? Eh.

Dont you love how people complain about (Insert their favourite theme here) and how it doesn't have a LEAGUE game mode. Guys, they are creating a mini game almost like a mobile app. Please read before you cry!

Zac has absorbed all the water from the pool and is pranking people by posing as the "water" himself. Create a splash so big it knocks the REAL water out of him and back into the pool!

I would like Pool Party or PROJECT. Mostly because I would be able play Leona Leona

But I don't see what kind of minigame you can do at summer. Beach volley? Surfing? SunBathing? Cocktails making? I dunno, What do normal people do on the summer? I looked upon water polo but this sound boring.

Water pistol fight? Might be a bit straight up, but players and Rioters are a creative bunch - there's nothing on this poll that makes me worried about not having enough ideas for, and I'm a design lead of one of the teams!

Excellent question. If you know where they're lurking, could you go give them a prod? There's only, what, about 200 votes in it for third place? Not that many in the grand scheme of things. We could do great things with the most metal virtual band that ever unlived.
