Cursor Update on PBE v2

Hello everyone! Thank you for all the feedback we’ve gotten so far on the new cursor. We’ve been reading through all of it and making a bunch of iterations internally, and today we have a fresh version to share here and on PBE to get more eyes and feedback.

Note: The version you see here is not the final art - we’re focusing on shapes right now, and then will polish after those are locked. :)

As you can see from the gif and images, we’re trying out a few things here. Let’s talk about each one.

  1. Shape change on Enemy Hover
  2. Different angle
  3. New shape with internal cut-out

1) Shape change on Enemy Hover

The most common piece of feedback we got was around needing a shape change on Enemy Hover to get that instant feedback. We've tried a bunch of different forms for this internally—other color changes, switching to a targeting reticle shape, and a couple others.

After those attempts, we’re testing out an update to the existing sword-shape for multiple reasons: It gets us a clear shape change without significant distraction, it can work at similar angles to the primary cursor, and of course we get to benefit from everyone’s existing familiarity with this shape.

That being said, the old sword had a few problems of getting lost in minion waves and during team fights because of its slimmer profile, which is part of why we were looking at other shapes originally. We’re trying to mitigate this by having a flat, bright space in the blade, but are definitely interested in feedback there.

2) Different Angle

We originally started with a 45 degree angle because that's what the legacy gauntlet cursor uses. However, even though the gauntlet was set to a 45 degree angle, the asymmetrical shape of the hand makes the overall form look like it’s pointing more upward than 45 degrees.

Since the new cursor has a symmetrical shape, its weight is evenly distributed along whatever axis it is placed upon (45 degrees in this case), avoiding the optical illusion of being pointed at a different angle. This led to the new cursor sometimes feeling like it bent to the left, especially when interacting with flat interfaces like the store. By tilting the cursor so the left edge is on the 0 degree line and the right edge is on the 45 degree line, it should feel more familiar to your experience both in and out of League (the 0 degree angle is what most applications and operating systems use).

3) New Shape with Internal Cut-Out

We’re also trying out more of a diamond shape with an internal cut-out. We saw some minor feedback about the first version looking too simplistic, so we’re hoping this version feels more interesting (and more fitting with League’s other UI) without giving up clarity.

Having the cut-out in the middle also gives us a useful space to communicate non-critical information where a shape change is overkill. For example, the internal diamond could turn blue when hovering over an ally, as shown above.

Generally a huge improvement. I'm a little thrown off by how much thinner the sword is though, and would encourage looking at ways to make that a bit wider so your eyes adjust to it more easily. I'd also consider making the portion of the ward indicator that changes color a bit more obvious (possibly an inner ring or the 0/3 text?) to make it more immediately obvious you're safely in the bush.

Finally, a tiny bit of color splashed on the enemy indicator might be good, just 'cause people are used to the color change currently -- and, on that note, the blue on ally-hover could probably be more prominent. I actually missed it at first.

Here my opinions regarding the new cursor:

  1. I liked the first iteration of the cursor update much better!

The first iteration had a much readable style than the new one. The new cursor is to slim. Its strange, and Assassin's Creed like new form makes it in my opinion, very difficult to distinguish it from abilities (especially in team fights).

The new cursor proposal doesn’t improve visibility at all and is at the same poor level as the vanilla cursor.

Furthermore, because of the change of the width, I had the impression, the cursor had changed colour compared to the last cursor version. After a comparison again the old and the new version, it turned out to be the same colour. Or is it really the same colour?

  1. For the sword version of the new cursor, I still do not know what to think of it. On the one hand, I find the idea (looking to the first cursor update) that no matter if attacking or moving, the cursor remains the same was appealing and improves clarity. However, I suggest making the colour changes more visible. Making the colour change of the cursor more visible was absolutely not achieved in the 2nd cursor update. In respect to the cursor change, the 2nd update is a step backwards in comparison to the 1st proposal.

On the other side, I think that as it is working right now in the game: having a sword indicating were able to attack sometimes is very helpful. I guess that for beginners who have just started playing the game seeing the sword is a useful feature. For the sword to work out better, I suggest the sword has to be broader or bolder. At the moment the sword is much too thin and inconspicuous. For example, it could become wider going up the top (a more tapered form of the sword). Also, the handle of the sword seems a bit too pointy... a rounded variant or design might look better.

  1. With the new angle, I do not like it at all. It is just terrible! Especially sword cursor angle, it is very noticeable and gives a static and optically false look and feel or perception. Please do not do that to us!!!

(ミ ̄ー ̄ミ).

  1. Here a few ideas for the casting of the abilities to allies/ or your self:

  • For the healing function, it would be cool if the cursor would change to an "ambulance cross" icon: e.g.the red cross logo/icon might be an easily understandable connotation for the healing function. Also, the colour could change to green, but it would be ok if the cursor stays in the new brown look and feel. I guess that the player understands the brown icon as well somehow.

  • For the shields: it would be nice/OK if the cursor simply changes to a shield. Keep it simple. In regards to the cursor colour/shield colour: Maybe you could use a light blue or a white colour. A light blue reminds you of your allies. Or the white colour reminds you of shields.

In case you can also do the same as you did for the healing: Stay to brown for the sake of visibility.

I tested both current versions on the PBE and hoped that you at Riot will come up with a design, that everyone can enjoy. Keep going.

Now this is way better than what it was!

BUT at this point this is just a reskin of the legacy cursor, a facelift if you will. Which is not bad, it was needed to hammer out some issues that the old cursor had. Now allow me to ask some questions which probably wont get answered, but anyways: -Are you guys planning to add a feature to change the cursors color to our liking? I'd instantly change it to purple to make it absolutly distinguishable in any situation. -Are you guys planning to add a feature to where i can change the shape of the sword? I'd actually prefer the bulkier one(last one in the picure with the angles) -Are you guys planning to add a feature to where i can change the color which the cursor appears at in different situation? Now its stays white even when hovering an enemy.

Once again: You guys are making a cursor that will stay with us probably years. Take your time and implement features, since you have the opportunity now. Make it futureproof. Allow us to make the cursor feel good. One theme wont fit everyone here :) League's cursor is like CS:GO's crosshair. Everyone has his/her own style and prefered shape. Let us get some options. White color for the cursor seems like a good choice, would be interested how it looks on the howling abyss tho. It may be hard to see.

Xyltin6/13/2018, 9:06:33 PM4 votes

Really like the base cursor, looks pretty and still simple and the glow in the middle is a great idea for the mouse over status. That one is definitely awesome.

I don't like the sword. it looks a bit strange to me for some reason I can't grasp.

Give us the option of keeping the old one.

I liked the new cursor from the last PBE cycle and the sword from this one.

I think there should be options for people to make their own cursor out of presets and mix and match their own preset. Diamond icons, hand icons, sword icons, colors. Change color or not. Change only shape, or shape and color or only color. Change to what color, when on enemy, when on ally etc. Or just don't bother asking since everyone has different opinions and most people who don't even know this thread exists will be pissed off about the change or won't care at all.

Choose regular cursor: [drop down box]
Choose attack cursor: [drop down box] [Change color checkbox]

I made this post a while back on reddit when you released the first version of the cursor, but my post got kinda buried. Heres just an idea that iv had for a couple years that i think you would really helpful as someone who plays with only smartcast. hope you get to see this ( i would remake the design to work with the newnew cursor but im lazy :( )

My main issue right now is with wards the only way you can know if a ward is going to be placed in a bush is if you have the ward/or trinket you are currently placing not on smart-cast (example) Problem: not smart-cast

So with this new cursor this is how smartcasting a ward will look like in a bush (example) Problem: no visual indicator to tell if the ward you are smart-casting will be in the bush

My idea is a cursor that it friendly for smart-casting wards since currently if you smart cast a ward you will not know 100% if it will be in a bush especially in the case of placing a ward on the edge of a bush which is typically an optimal place to place one

The new Smart-cast Friendly warding cursor^TM As of right now the only part of the new cursor that changes color is the small square at the bottom(as far as i know according to riots pictures) so having the triangle shaped part change color should not cause any issues or interference with that feature. Problem: Solved?? More problems?? ( With the new design the inner diamond could turn green indicating the cursor is in the bush since as far as i know the inner diamond doesnt turn green for anything else)

Love this new minimalist approach

ModKnightsKemplar6/14/2018, 2:17:59 PM1 votes

I realize you are asking mostly for feedback about shape, but I want to see bigger color changes on enemies and allies.

If you're going with the cut-out in the diamond, I want that cut-out to be larger so that the color change is very clear when it happens.

I am not one of the people that wants the sword or thinks it's necessary. I think a wide color changing area would honestly be better; parity between how the cursor behaves on enemies and allies would be high on my priority list for these changes. Don't know how well that tracks with other feedback that you're getting.

Gunnerkreig6/14/2018, 3:24:02 PM1 votes

Hey! I really like the newer swords - I think they could be angled ever so slightly more, though. I also think that you might want to add a bit of a "handle" to the diamond shape. You could make it look like a pretty badass dagger.

One thing I'd really like would be an option in the Games menu to change the SIZE of the cursor. I used to play on a few different screens, and could change the size to match the resolution on each one... but for some reason I think that option disappeared at some point. On my new computer, the cursor is absolutely tiny, and I honestly lose track of it all the time during crazy teamfights or particularly hectic moments, when I'm playing a mechanical champion.

This cursor looks much better, sword is too smol, I can’t tell if there’s a difference between bushes or not, so long as you add faker auto targeting to the final product I’ll be happy.

EvolutionEpic6/15/2018, 1:10:24 PM1 votes

Please make it that there is a option to keep the old cursor. In my opinion the new one is horrible and there is nothing wrong with the old one.Amumu

Do they normally use those champs in testing? Otherwise why use only freljord champs and also why trundle instead of sejuani?

Like the first version its very difficult to see when you are pointing and ally. Like i said in the previuos post it will be better if all the cursor change its color, not only a small part of it

EyesOfTheFox6/13/2018, 8:50:40 PM1 votes

@SpaceNorth Was there any thought given to making the target portion different for minions and enemy champions? Sometimes it's hard to click on an enemy champion when they are behind a tower (the worst) or in the middle of minions. When it hovers over any non ally target it becomes the dagger so there are times when you think you clicked the champion but you clicked the minion and get flamed #feelsbadman I guess I could just look for the red outline around them, but sometimes thats hard to notice too in the heat of battle. Other than that I dig how much cleaner the new look is~

VieldWolf6/13/2018, 9:28:13 PM1 votes

I liked the previous version that was on PBE much more than this one. It seems sloppier and feels like the sword was just added due to people whining about change. The previous version with differently colored gemstones felt much cleaner and more distinguishable.

r xy6/13/2018, 9:30:29 PM1 votes

what about the cursor showing if it in the brush or not (it currently only does this in ward place mode, but having that info (or at least some way to access it) always would be nice tbh)

Yokujin6/13/2018, 9:39:59 PM1 votes

the new cursor seems to look nice and indicates enemy hover clearly but

i think the ally hover is not good enough; the center turning blue may look nice if you focus on it but it's not very noticeable due to how contrast works: -it's a shade of blue between the darkest blue and lightest blue -pure RGB blue is quite dark, has low contrast to black -being the middle tone blue it can blend with the black cut-out with the brighter tone surroundings making the blue tone seem darker than it is, making the change hard to notice

A Porkchop6/13/2018, 9:54:21 PM1 votes

I get that the shape change is good from an accessibility standpoint, but personally I find it easier to keep track of the cursor when the shape and main color are consistent so you always know what you are looking for, regardless of what it is over (except for ward and ability aiming, in which the player took action other then moving the mouse and thus expects it to change). But as others have said , the more options that are available the more people can use what works for them. I think customization really is the best way forward.

Frz6/13/2018, 11:50:00 PM1 votes

Please allow us to change the size of the cursor. I play on a 3440x1440 monitor and the legacy cursor is way too small which causes me to lose track of it when in fights.

E Man forever6/14/2018, 1:59:01 AM1 votes

I would like to see the cursor change color when it changes to a sword for clarity

doubledgedbeard6/14/2018, 2:57:01 AM1 votes

Feedback from a YoloMouse user...

(Speaking of which, will I still be allowed to use alternative cursors, like YoloMouse, after the update?)

I have the inverted cursor for my default, which means I can always find it regardless of the scene content, whether it's the bright snow of the Howling Abyss, or a dark corner under Fog of War on Summoner's Rift.

If you could make the cursor bigger overall and support inversion for the primary cursor, I'd consider switching.

YourSh4dow6/14/2018, 6:48:12 AM1 votes

Ok this iteration is 100% better. BUT u might aswell go all the way and do change the cursor to small shield when targeting ally instead of just colour change the base one. Reasoning for this would be that if u r targeting ally its in 90%+ times to heal/shield anyway.

Ąshen One6/14/2018, 9:13:20 AM1 votes

Can we get the option to choose which cursor we want to see ingame? I like the old one very much and will miss the little pointing finger guy item 3070
