Is it just or do the General Discussion board posts feel awful
Like if you notice they are different. They don't stack well with responses to posts. It's hard to explain they are just really bad compared to other topics like game play.

This is actually an intentional decision, and one there will never be full agreement on. A lot of GD regulars really disliked the standard discussion view (as much of the GD community at the time -- and perhaps now -- came from the old traditional forum layout), so we turned GD to chronological only. It's a decision we could reevaluate in the future, certainly, but not one we're likely to reverse lightly.
