Maudlin Thoughts at the End of Days

Saying Farewell to Boards - League of Legends

I’m sure there are going to be a bunch of questions and more than a few accusations, so let’s start with, yes, we’ve known this was coming for a while now. It has been painful to watch them dismantle the Boards and not being able to say anything - NDA’s and all, don’t ya know.

And, no, this doesn’t have anything to do with the Volunteer Moderation Program. Riot has been very clear about that, at least with us. So why are they nuking the Boards?

I’ve been saying for several years now that Riot has never had a consistent vision for what the Boards are supposed to be.

  • Do new players come here to learn? No. Much better information can be found elsewhere and the community tends to treat newcomers… let’s just say badly.
  • Are the Boards a source of quality feedback? You must be kidding. Go take a look at Gameplay.
  • Is there a vibrant, welcoming community? Also no.

There is also the metric fuckton of batshit crazy. I still can’t go into details, but there have been lawsuits and restraining orders. I had to learn an entirely new level of computer security. There were also the hyper-obsessive people who were just absolutely locked into the idea they had the inside track on how the world works and proceeded to tell us all how much we suck. It’s one of life’s great constants that most people will demand you do things to their satisfaction rather than make it happen themselves. Some days, Dunning-Kruger feels as inescapable as gravity.

My feeling is that someone at Riot finally asked what they were getting for their time and money invested in the Boards and came to the logical answer: not a damned thing. They can use Reddit and Twitter to connect with the player base. Other people will moderate and maintain those platforms at no cost to Riot. Given how poorly the Boards software was programmed, it would cost tons for Riot to create a viable replacement. Given that, this is the logical decision.

To be honest, I’m glad and relieved this is how the Boards end. I don’t think most of you have any idea just how relentlessly toxic and infantile people have decided to be. We signed on to this program hoping to make a difference and were basically told, “nah, I want to be the worst possible version of myself” by all too many people.

It’s sad, too. I’m part of other online communities that have managed to make moderation work. You know what the key is? Strict moderation. Even stricter than anything we ever considered. There is a deep-seated rot in Boards culture and nothing we could do would have changed it at all. You can know you're tilting at windmills because that's who you are. That doesn't make the futility sting any less.

During these last few days, I encourage you to take a long, last look. This is who you are.

I just can't believe we don't even get archives. Unbelievable. I know the boards are mostly a dumpster fire, but there were some really cool threads and concepts and memes.

I remember how angry I was that another game I was playing didn't have forums. No channel for me to discuss with other players or report something that a dev might see. I know it's a slim chance even here, but at least I can feel like I put it out there and made an effort trying to give feedback and report bugs.

Not even archives...just erase everything...years and years of threads...

And to think I was defending Riot the other day in a discussion with my friends. Every time I do, they turn around and do something like this. But they ARE too much of a small indie company to afford keeping archives up, I totally understand.

Oh you poor thing, is it hard to always play the victim? You didn't do a damn thing, you never offered solutions and you silenced opposition. You are also a liar. Your life or privacy has never been threatened and we all know it. You're just trying to garner sympathy after you flopped alongside every other mod.

You're also extremely arrogant and full of yourself. Many people have called you out before.

I’m sure there are going to be a bunch of questions and more than a few accusations, so let’s start with, yes, we’ve known this was coming for a while now.

There really is nothing to ask since you will never answer truthfully. And no, you did not know this was coming. Laughing Fish was the one constantly talking about it, yet you denied his claims. You can't just come out and say that you knew. You didn't know jack shit.

And, no, this doesn’t have anything to do with the Volunteer Moderation Program. Riot has been very clear about that, at least with us.

No, this has EVERYTHING to do with you incompetent amoebas. You're not slithering away from the guilt this time.

I’ve been saying for several years now that Riot has never had a consistent vision for what the Boards are supposed to be.

Again, that is a thing Fish said, not you. Stop taking credit for something you never cared about. Just admit it, Fish was right. Arrogant until the very end. You simply can't do any wrong, can you?

Are the Boards a source of quality feedback? You must be kidding. Go take a look at Gameplay.

Did you do anything to change that? Short answer: No. Long answer: Noooo.

Is there a vibrant, welcoming community? Also no.

Did you do anything to change that? Short answer: No. Long answer: Noooo.

There is also the metric fuckton of batshit crazy.

OH SHIT, HE JUST DROPPED AN F-BOMB, EVERYONE SHUT UP, IT MEANS HIS POINT HAS MERIT! Also, are you talking about yourself?

I still can’t go into details, but there have been lawsuits and restraining orders.

No, there haven't and that's why you can't go into details. Come on, you are usually very good at making shit up, what's different this time? Who the hell would ever give a damn about you or the boards that much lol?

I had to learn an entirely new level of computer security.

Wait, you can learn? I thought learning for you was a foreign concept, which is why we were in this mess in the first place. Fake news. Que the plethora of ''Omg sorry this happened to you, I apologize on the behalf of the boards'' from a bunch of bootlickers.

There were also the hyper-obsessive people who were just absolutely locked into the idea they had the inside track on how the world works and proceeded to tell us all how much we suck.

You really don't need to know much about the world to understand just how much you sucked.

It’s one of life’s great constants that most people will demand you do things to their satisfaction rather than make it happen themselves.

This isn't one of those cases because you didn't do anything to anyone else's satisfaction except your own. Nice try, though.

Some days, Dunning-Kruger feels as inescapable as gravity.

The only people radiating the Dunning-Kruger effect are you mods. You are so full of yourselves and yet you are complete failures. THAT is the Dunning-Kruger effect. Learn to comprehend what you read. On top of that, you radiate a lot of cognitive dissonance.

To be honest, I’m glad and relieved this is how the Boards end. I don’t think most of you have any idea just how relentlessly toxic and infantile people have decided to be.

I don't think most of you mods have any idea just how toxic, childish, immature and ignorant you decided to be. You're no rays of sunshine. You're worse than that bunch because you hold/held power. Most of that behavior is a direct result and response to your incompetence.

We signed on to this program hoping to make a difference and were basically told, “nah, I want to be the worst possible version of myself” by all too many people.

No one made you sign on to this program, but you did anyways because you wanted a position of power to feel accomplished. YOU too were the worst possible versions of yourselves. Stop flinging shit at others if you're not better.

It’s sad, too. I’m part of other online communities that have managed to make moderation work.

Yet you did not take notes from the mods there? Funny, it's almost like you don't actually care until you have to defend your fragile ego.

You know what the key is?

Simple answer- not making you a mod.

Strict moderation. Even stricter than anything we ever considered.

Imagine saying shit like this without being immediately considered a clown. I highly doubt you considered anything. That is beyond your ability.

There is a deep-seated rot in Boards culture and nothing we could do would have changed it at all.

I agree, there is a deep-seated rot in the Boards community, and that rot stems from the mod team. It just goes down the shitter from there. Shitty mods = shitty boards. It is simple cause and effect, but I assume that is too hard for you to grasp.

That doesn't make the futility sting any less.

For something to be futile, it has to first be done. You didn't do anything except censor criticism while flinging shit at people yourselves.

During these last few days, I encourage you to take a long, last look. This is who you are.

Apparently we are facing an identity crisis. Who would've thunk?

Truth is, you mods did make a difference. You made things worse. And you, Ulan, are the sorest loser of them all. Not only did you run the boards down to the ground with your ignorance, hypocrisy and hubris, you also showed no remorse, doubled down and pointed fingers at everyone else except yourself.

Degnisyllort3/1/2020, 7:39:31 PM27 votes

So lets get this straight....When Laughing Fish said the boards are going to be deleted or changed you guys said "the boards aren't going to be deleted", yet "we’ve known this was coming for a while now"? Why lie in the first place?

FOR JUSTICE3/1/2020, 8:08:23 PM22 votes

Well yeah, a community forum will only ever be as productive as it's moderation is.

Too strict and you get Reddit. Too lax and it's impossible to find anything productive, But it doesnt exactly help being that perfectly fine gameplay posts are removed because one or two people who aren't even the OP get it removed or locked, or one or two bad words in the OP get it removed rather then simply just removing said bad part from the OP.

So sure while we can take a look at who we are, you can as well take a long, hard look at what you've raised and fostered.

ChickenWrap3/1/2020, 8:05:15 PM21 votes

Imagine Riot not giving a single flying fuck about us and then complaining that the Boards users are toxic.

if you treat someone like an abandoned fucking child, they're going to act like an abandoned fucking child.

This is probably the single most ass-backwards decision Riot has made since forcing everyone to even come to this shit-heap to begin with.

ChickenWrap3/1/2020, 8:07:11 PM21 votes

Also, shut the fuck up Rujitra, YOU DON'T EVEN PLAY THE FUCKING GAME. You have had a mod hard-on for the past god knows how long and literally nobody gives a fuck.

We signed on to this program hoping to make a difference and were basically told, “nah, I want to be the worst possible version of myself” by all too many people.

I wonder why...it's definitelly not because riot straight up ignores their official forum, right?

It’s sad, too. I’m part of other online communities that have managed to make moderation work. You know what the key is? Strict moderation. Even stricter than anything we ever considered. There is a deep-seated rot in Boards culture and nothing we could do would have changed it at all. You can know you're tilting at windmills because that's who you are. That doesn't make the futility sting any less.

Imagine having the nerves to reflect it all on the community. You disgust me. Even if we are the reason why Boards failed, so is both riot and moderation team. If you've been part of communities that had a working moderation, why didnt you use that knowledge here? Either you were too lazy or youre straight up lying.

During these last few days, I encourage you to take a long, last look. This is who you are.

Are you seriously trying to make us feel guilty? My god youre the prime example of Riot's bootlicker.

But okay, I'll be the 1st one to reflect on things I did wrong, and apologise as "part of the problem".

I'm sorry for not liking in-game changes. I'm sorry for criticizing said changes I'm sorry for not liking the way riot does things. I'm sorry for criticizing them. I'm sorry for not making walls of texts about things which were already discussed several times, and yet ignored by riot. I'm sorry for not accepting every change with a big, fat smile on my face. And finally, I'm sorry for not being riot's NPC white knight.

If we ever get a replacement for the Boards, I'll make sure to be the best riot's asslicker I can possibly be, since you think giving negative feedback is "toxic".

Oh and btw

There is also the metric fuckton of batshit crazy. I still can’t go into details, but there have been lawsuits and restraining orders. I had to learn an entirely new level of computer security.

No1 buys that shit. Stop fucking lying just to make yourself look like a victim.

You keep whining about Riot not knowing what the boards were supposed to be. It's supposed to be a place where LoL players get to chat with each other. It's not supposed to be micro-managed to get conversations you want out of it. It's an organic platform whose content is largely determined by the user base.

You don't need stricter modding, you need consistent modding with clearly defined rules.

General Esdeath 3/1/2020, 8:25:35 PM16 votes

Most of the mods didn't really do much to make this place better, they just power tripped

So...is it our fault? Fucking again? Alright, gonna speak the language people like Rioters understand.

These morons, removed Gameplay+, a section dedicated to in depth analysis of the meta/gameplay/tactics etc and you come out and say "Dumpster fire", we no shit sherlock!! It wasnt as dead as roleplay and yet it got removed.

Now, want to learn what they got from boards? A place where the average Joe could go around and speak freely without the sheepole of Reddit downvoting him to oblivion! And theee wasnt only gameplay, you know! Lore, creations and more will be deleted all for nothing.

So, instead of you siding up with them, you could ask yourself "huh, could be the trash game be the thing that makes 99% of the threads in gp being titled "the game is trash because.."? Could it be the companys fault and not the player who comes to express his opinion, like it or not?"

But anyways, people like you are needed on Reddit so go right ahead, join the police force over there

{quoted} Strict moderation

I can take playing the victim but this is just BS.

You didn't try to moderate it strictly, you censored shit. Strict moderation follows rules. If I get aggressive and call you an asshat then sure, remove it. It's an insult and while I personally won't get sad from someone calling me that there's people that might do. But if we're in a discussion and I bring up an example of a play, calling it a completely r%%%%%ed course of action, then removing that post because you saw "r%%%%%ed" in it isn't strict moderation.

That's being lazy and removing it based on a word. We don't need you to do that, we can get a bot to do your work if that's what your work is.

AllenPCarlson3/2/2020, 2:34:59 AM13 votes

{quoted}

Two things here:

From the beginning, Keyru set the tone for us as moderators. Her first guideline was "it always sucks to have your content removed." This led to our first mandate not being anywhere near as strict as Modsquad (who sucked all the ass). The team has its own culture, as well, and disagreements to boot. I was the one who pushed hardest for cleaning up the various sub-boards, but the will and consensus were never there.

The Curator was way better. The only ones who keep saying volunteer mods are better are the volunteer mods. Pat yourself on the back a little harder. Of course, you're not going to say, "Yeah, we fucking suck at modding and the guys before us did a way better job."

You guys are radically inconsistent. First this is removed because of harassment, WTF? Second, you tell me it's not because of harassment, but product placement, I ask why the reason for the removal has changed and you give me a mealy-mouthed bullshit answer. You answer with a bunch of bullshit because you have a philosophy of transparency. That's something that the previous mods didn't do, but by reaching out you made yourselves look inconsistent. That was really the point where I lost respect for the mods' decision making. Lastly, I'm posting Bud-Lite shit posts left and right and you guys don't do shit.

You even told me I should know what the rules are by now. Hell if I know, you guys just make them up as you go along.

But, yes, you worked so hard and really fought for what's right, but in the end it was the community's fault. The best part about this you're all done. Your little power trip. I can't think of any other way to put it, but, just IMO, I think you're a huge loser.

Thefrostyviking3/1/2020, 10:46:19 PM13 votes

Dear gods i am laughing my ass off, OP you actually know the answer to why the boards turned so bad yourself but try to deflect the blame for it.

Alas your own writing betrays you.

Key words : " Even stricter than anything we ever considered. "

And here is the problem, you and the other moderators were way too damn sloppy, lax and failed to enforce the rules and guidelines and whatever else that were meant to keep shit down and additionally you failed to actually implement any rules or quality checks at all.

So naturally we got flooded with shit, there was nothing to keep it away.

I myself am part of a few different communities with their own forums as well and while they all have different systems with or without voting the common link for a healthy forum is indeed always strict moderation.

Only when this fails will the forum grow sick and die as any post of quality gets drowned in tens if not hundreds of shit ones.

.............

Had you created clear rules for behavior and quality and then enforced them things would have been much, much muuuuuch better than this.

. . .

Emphasis on the enforcing part, rules do exist but i honestly doubt most users even know about them but even they dont mention jack shit about post quality which is a massive oversight because if they did then deleting low quality shiet would not be something that people could complain or flame moderators for.

Instead we got hundreds of posts going " omg x moderator removed my post (10 words complaint about balance), they suck!:<"

Phew.

Damn tho, seeing you pitying yourself and the others while blaming the users for this colossal failure that is actually entirely moderation based is kind of hilarious.

If you did not want people to post so much bullshit and get away with it or throw shade at you for removing disguised hate threads, create clear rules about this shit and enforce them.

Fail to do that, which you did, and then you fully deserve to be mocked as fools.'

"Edit"

However in hindsight i will also acknowledge that Riot left a sorry mess to a volunteer team and having the latter take all the blame is not quite right either.

Riot definitely had a part in letting things go so far as well and shame on them for that, and even more shame for not properly listening to their moderators about implementing baseline features for them to work with.

"End of edit."

Laura ß3/1/2020, 9:51:36 PM12 votes

Boards are dead and so will this game soon, just wait for the next big MOBA to replace this shit. Riot will continue to promote the pro scene and ignore the rest of the 99.99% of players.

Well I guess this is the end of interacting with the community outside of in-game stuff. Fuck reddit all I see on that is proplay shit unless you go to a subreddit.
