Boards Usage: Part 2 - Reporting Boards Posts

Hey polliwogs, DTN here again and this time I've got a really important part of shaping our boards community to review, this being the post reporting feature;

We all see that distasteful meme, that 1000th "Nerf Yasuo" post with nothing but "2 stronk, Rito plz" inside, or that jerk with nothing better to do than tell you five times how much your idea stinks. That's why I'm here today to discuss with you the value of Reporting posts and how to do it right.

What's Reporting for?

    So glad you asked, anonymous amphibian!

    The boards are moderated by real people, so while we are active members of the boards community just like you, we don't quite have the visual prowess of Twisted Fate. Reporting a post will immediately let us know that you've taken issue with a comment or thread.

    The Report button is located on the bottom right of each post.

    reportbutton

    You can always find the Boards Universal Rules on top of the left sidebar; Please review this for more details on what kind of behavior is expected within the Boards Community. Individual board guidelines and etiquette are under that sidebar while inside that individual board.

    General Discussion has some more relaxed rules, which you can find here.

What Report option do I pick?

    There are 4 options to choose from;

  • Offensive
    • Use this option for inappropriate, mature, or content otherwise unsuitable for the community (like racial slurs and porn or comments suggestive of such).
  • Spam
    • Mark content which is low-effort or repeatedly posted in a short period by the same person. Copy-pasta from different individuals is low-effort and disruptive too.
  • Harassment
    • When someone is targeting an individual or a group with insulting comments, especially after they have been asked not to do so, use this option to let us know it's become a problem. This includes linking images or posts to report a player or shame them, even if their intent isn't to do so.
  • Incorrect Board
    • Boards organization is crucial so that everyone sees the content they are interested in, and conversely posters have a chance to show their content off. If someone is posting on the wrong board hit this option so we can direct them to the appropriate board.

My problem doesn't seem to have a Report category...

    That's ok my fishy friend, we check every report, so if you're unsure of the proper option (or even if you're sure there isn't a good option) just hit any of them and we'll take a look.

    Don't take the report option names or descriptions as a restriction to what we will action on; if the post violates the rules we'll handle it.

I reported but the post is still there!

    As mere humans prone to mistakes, natural calamities, acts of Urgod, and the necessity of sleep, we may sometimes have a delayed response so please be patient!

    If it looks like we've missed something or made a bad call, as part of our efforts for greater mod visibility we have a Moderation Discord set up so you guys can come to us directly. Below is the link to our verification post we've set up so we know who we're talking to;

  • Boards Moderation Discord Verification
  • When you get there, make sure you read the Welcome page rules; we adhere to the Universal Rules there too, so don't do anything you wouldn't do on the boards.

Should I always report?

    We do encourage you to consistently and frequently report posts that are disruptive and offensive, but that doesn't mean we are aiming for a zero-negativity environment.

    If someone is being rude, it's often a good idea to just ask them politely to stay on topic and try to keep the discussion respectful. We try to get ahead of a toxic discussion before it gets out of control, but if the community is making an effort to do so by itself more discussions will be productive without the need for our intervention, which can sometimes end up feeling like censorship.

    If the situation escalates anyway, if we had our eyes on it due to your reports we'll be in a better position to step in immediately.

What's this about Volunteer Moderation?

    After a test run with Arbiters moderating the Player Behavior board, we opened applications for GD to moderate their own board too. With its successful transition from the old moderation we opened up applications for other boards as well.

    For information on these programs, follow the links below;

  • Introducing the Riot Games Volunteer Programs
  • Looking for Wardens - Volunteer Moderation
  • We are striving to create a boards experience you guys will love, including higher moderator visibility so you guys know what we're up to and why, and we're working on community programs you guys can participate in and making awesome posts to get everyone involved!

This concludes Part 2 of our Boards Usage series, How to Report your Discussions. With this blessing I bestow, you are hereby granted the power to make the Boards a better place for all!

    Some of the content got cut when trying to view this. "Incorrect Board" is the last line of text I can see in What Report Option, "verification post" is the last line I can see in I Reported. Looks like a similar problem in other posts as well.

    1. So how does one judge whether a post is low-effort?

    2. And how do you make sure that people who report a post just because they don't like it don't get unjustly removed?
