I think the reason people start at 1 is also to prevent the negative herd mentality. Giving you a 1 out the door promotes a positive feel, even if it is artificial.

Exactly, plus it makes it less weird that you upvoted yourself. As upvotes effect what makes it to the hot page, upvoting yourself would be a good course of action. However, many see self-upvoting as a cringy. But since the upvotes are all automatic, everyone starts on an even playing field.

Right, seeing 0 just sets people off and they don't even look at it. Unless it's like -20, then they look at it for an entirely different reason.
