quick boards question for staff

why does posting comments or posts increase your life time up-votes if your vote is the only one on said content?

if you reply to one thread 15 times and no one down votes you you get +15 lifetime upvotes seems a bit strange to me

The short story is that's how the tech has worked since it was built, and it's not something we're concerned enough about to look into fixing compared to everything else we could be doing with the tech work bandwidth we have.

it shows the forum activity, and well.. your own opinion matters, right? :p

ofc if you spam/farm upvotes, banhammer would yum..

Why do elected officials get to vote for themselves? Same idea.

If you don't like the auto-upvote for yourself, you can downvote your own posts and comments.

As Djinn said, it's just the way the programming works.

I personally don't mind it because I use it as a gauge for my number of posts. Take the number of upvotes, take away like a third, and you've got a pretty solid number. Like I've got 57.5K upvotes. If I take away a third of those, maybe a bit more just to be safe, I've probably made about 30K - 35K posts on the Boards in total.
