Let's Talk Boards - Design, Features, & More

ModWuks·10/17/2017, 10:24:22 PM·14 votes·1,692 views

Hi everyone, I'm Wuks and I'm one of the folks who works on addressing and improving most things Boards-related. A few months ago, I opened the floor to community feedback regarding the Boards. I'd like to do that again. If you have an idea to improve the Boards, please post it in the comment below! It can relate to moderation, templating/design, you name it!

All feedback will be taken into consideration:

  • Moderation-related feedback will be passed to the Moderation Team
  • Design suggestions may be implemented live on this thread, and may be used as a template for our posts in the future
  • Features/Quality-of-Life suggestions, depending on size and scope, may also be considered; as you may know, there are some limitations with what we can do, but we're just trying to compile a comprehensive wishlist, so the sky's the limit!

If you're looking for some inspiration, check out our previous "Let's Talk Boards" posts:

We look forward to seeing all of your ideas!

Wew lads. Here's some stuff I'd like to see for the boards:

  • Spoiler Tag

From discussing esport results to touching on an end-game portion of a fan fiction, spoiler tags would help in discussing everything that may not be something other people want to hear about.

  • Chapter/Gallery System

Be it for a fan fic, for an artist or whatever, a way to have multiple "pages" in a thread would help organize and catalog giant works or art threads rather than copy-pasting a ton of imgur links.

  • Signature/Pinned Discussions on a profile.

By the same extent, I'd really like it if we had the ability to pin 1-3 topics we wanted people to look at when it came to our boards history. Maybe it's a really good gameplay discussion or maybe it's the best joke you've ever made, it'd just help in getting a feel for what you want people on the boards to associate with you.

  • Additional Text options.

Just for flavor sake. Color, size, etc. Nothing more to it.

  • Ability to follow a user or subscribe to a user's threads/posts.
  • More formatting options for post content. Specifically colors, dividers, and maybe headers with formatting other than just larger text.
  • Most of what Captain Marvelous said.
  • Multiquote feature.
  • Maybe an identifier for Arbiter/Archivist posts in a topic on the relevant boards, as I've seen that requested before.

Just let me report posts on mobile

Drugoth10/18/2017, 5:53:06 PM2 votes

Stickers and other shiny things for mobile view please! It's really tedious to have to switch to the full site to have access to all the stickers, champion portraits, items and summoners.

#Please! [sg-soraka]

I'd like a culture change where we become less of an echo chamber and more of a discussion forum. To this end, I'd like it if the boards did not show the score of posts and comments other than my own.

I believe this will work because I've been browsing this way for a while, by using my ad blocker's "Block element" feature to hide the total number of votes. I feel like it helps me come to my own conclusions based on the content of the post instead of the number of points. The only time I ever feel the need to disable it is to check the score of my own discussions or comments, which is why I'd like them not to be hidden.

If you'd like to try this yourself, I use uBlock origin with the filter: boards.na.leagueoflegends.com##.total-votes

So there's this problem I keep seeing that's not terribly big, but rather annoying and hopefully easy to fix:

Sometimes a person will make a comment and be plain mistaken about some factual thing. Naturally, everyone who knows that he got his facts wrong will down-vote the comment. But also, someone will inevitably reply to correct the mistake for the first guy. And everyone will upvote that correction (assuming it was made in a helpful way). The problem then is that these two comments will be seen as "controversial" thread by the Boards system, and thus they will end up as the top comment thread. But it shouldn't be important at all, since it's just some guy making a silly mistake and getting corrected.

It's just a simple "this guy is wrong, and this guy fixed it" interaction that shouldn't be interesting, but it's so obvious that it's easy to vote on. Is there any way that comments like these can be rated less highly by the system, or can we have moderators lock those comments down when they get in the way of actual discussion?

The biggest thing I would like to see added to the boards is the ability to subscribe to certain posters. The ability to blacklist posters you dislike is a close 2nd.

  • Improved Board Profiles and User features. I want to have a real profile and be able to really keep my profile up to date with stuff. It would also help when looking for shit on other people's profiles. Something like a sub feature is also really needed.

  • I would also really like some better text options and clarity. Right now if I want to size something up and I forget how to do it, I have to go looking for the page where it's listed, figure out what I want and then apply it to my post. It's something that should just be on the text bar. There is also a couple things I wouldn't mind or just better control over my text.

  • Personally I would like to see some more contests or highlights on the boards. I view the boards a LOT and I know some great stuff goes unseen by people and I know how bad it can feel to pour your heart into a post to have it be completely forgotten.

  • General Discussion needs to have a better viewing option. If someone comments to a thread, I would like to see more clearly to what they are commenting too. It's like the only reason I don't go there because I can't even view discussions properly.

  • Better Rioter tracking. Too much Help & Support stuff (I don't hate those guys but I don't need to see someone's post about not having icons) when I want to see a Riot commenting on Gameplay or Story or something. Part of this could be fixed with a sub feature or something.

  • Improve the search functions. Very weak and bare.

Think that's everything I can think of off the top of my head.

If feel like if a Gameplay post doesn't have an proposed solutions it should be removed. The solution can be kinda dumb but I'm really tired of the band-wagon QQ posts on Gameplay.

  • Sometimes the permalink feature breaks. When following a link from a 'notification' to a comment, if the thread is full enough that the comment is initially hidden, the page will never scroll down to show the comment and you have to go digging yourself or find a different permalinked comment from your notification history that is in that comment chain but not hidden. Makes replying to the comment cumbersome.

  • When a comment chain is out of reply space, it stops notifying the other person if your comment is the one being replied to each time. Perhaps allowing hybrid chains would be good, making it so that replies back and forth between particular users appear like an IM chat instead of recursively chaining them under one another. I don't know if this is practical but it would be nice to see something change about it.

  • Please if it is possible, make it so that Moderators can move discussions to the correct board instead of just having to lock or delete them.

  • Having to click 'show more' in order for browser search function to expand to check more content is really bothersome. I get quite frustrated whenever I have to scroll to the end of the page multiple times clicking 'show more' each time to expand the search.

  • It would be nice to be able to favorite and un-favorite posts so that I can come back and find ones that I intend to look at again instead of having to use the browser or even the website's search feature to find keywords that I kinda-sorta-maybe remembered correctly from the post or discussion that I wanted to find.

Can we get a sort filter on the boards home page? Like i know we can choose Best/Hot/New/Recent, but what i'm suggesting is another sort filter. E.g. You sort by Hot, and then filter by Last 24 hours/ Last Week/ Last Month etc... like when you search something specifically.

I'm not sure if this should go here or not, but I posted this about it in the player support a few days ago, and got a response, but i figure i'll post it here anyways lol.

Improve the search function. Specifically if you are looking for posts within a certain time frame. For example if I search the word "ardent" and specify results from within the last month, as soon as I click "show more", I'll get results from years ago mixed in.

This isn't so much a request or suggestion, as much as it is vague musings, but...

So ya'know how people sometimes use threads more like petitions for change, rather than as discussions? Take the "daily reminder" threads, for example, where people are just trying to keep up a constant push for some goal, rather than having a back-and-forth talk. What if there was a more legitimate way for that to happen? Like, what if there was a section of the boards where people could post long-standing petitions that would stay visible (at the top of the section) as long as people kept voting for them? Or something like that. And if Riot responded to one of those hot ticket issues, it could sticky-ify the petition for a while, and mark it as like "being addressed" or something, until the issue is resolved.

Tangentially related: It would be nice to have a general development roadmap from Riot, where people can see what's being worked on. It doesn't have to contain any new information; just condense things that have already been talked about/announced into one place. Like that LeBlanc work that people keep asking Meddler about -- it would be nice if we could just go to a roadmap and see if "LB investigations" is still on there, or if it's been removed/iceboxed, or if there's any new progress noted on it. Something like this. ;)

I'd just want header and body of posts divided in style. It's absolutely irrelevant issue, but it's my annoying detalistic nature that would like special header for votes, name, icon, server, etc., a line below that and then text. This could also allow the header as whole be recolored for special people like moderators and stuff and not only the name.

Can we get rid of voting on threads or posts?

Can we have custom avatars without needing FEK?

Can we have more formtting options, and more readily available?

Would more fonts be doable?

The ordered list numbering system needs to be fixed. It gets wonky at times.
