Could we start a constructive discussion on overall support balancing?
Every complaint, every line of logic, and every entreaty to Riot regarding the old-school support roster has fallen on deaf ears, so I think it's just time to start treating this like a hostage negotiation and start talking demands.
Here is, in my eyes, Riot's beef with supports.
-
they force uninteractivity in lane if they have too much sustain.
-
they are toxic OP in solo lanes so they have to be kept weak.
-
invisible power is bad, Mmkay?
So I'm going to go champion to champion, suggest changes that would get rid of those two issues, and I'd like a Rioter to provide feedback on the buffs that would be allowed if those changes were to be out in. I'll be comparing for reference to three supports that have been deemed "healthy"-Nami, Braum, and Thresh.
Janna:
Riots beef- toxic in solo lane. Super safe, super easy waveclear. Can't let her be strong or she'll be super crazy mid.
Offered fix- Drastically reduce or remove tornado's damage to minions. -60% at the very minimum. She doesn't need it to support.
What would we like out of it? Damage. Please. Just enough to survive a solo lane. You Nerfed her ratios and bases so much with S4 that Janna gets bullied out of lane by literally every other chanpion. You removed her passive, damage, and utility and buffed the only part of her kit that was still strong, leaving her a walking ult despite her having the least uninteractivity support style of any traditional support.
Sona:
Riots beef- invisible power, I guess? And sustain. She's not a solo laner by any means so that's not it.
Offered fix- change her W and E. Give them longer CDs and mana costs and up their impact. Change the heal to a shield, and up the speed boost, and to compensate for the mana costs change power chord to 2 abilities. That way her engagement pattern is to charge in to harass and peel her carry out with W and E, rather than being passive.
Alistar:
Riots beef- he was at one point a strong jungler. So riot gutted his skills, boosted his mana costs, and revamped the entire jungle to force him out. Suffice to say they don't appear to be huge Alistar fans.
Offered fix- make his heal only useable if he's been damaged by a champion within 2 seconds. Get rid of the safe sustain and solidify Ali as the champion whose whole shtick is he takes a booting and keeps on mooing. His charge+knock up has ridiculous mana cost, and his heal is stupidly low impact. When Braum now exists, it's probably a good idea to consider some buffs to the other tank support that bring him closer to how Braums kit works-reward him for taking hits for the team.
Soraka:
Riots beef- all of the above. League of Legends could be called Riot V Soraka the nerfening. Uninteractivity, solo toxicity, and used to be invisible power.
Offered fix- drastically reduce star calls damage to minions. Completely eliminate her solo lane wave pressure. Additionally, reduce her "hp battery" playstyle by making the armor buff of Astral Blessing come before the heal (2 second delay) and make it scale off of damage taken during that duration. That way it's a teammate saving tool, not a passive heal. Just throw her some kind of bone for playability.
