Challenging Smite BUG
Smiting a champion with the challenging smite only does not grant assist credit or count as tagging them when a tower executes them

This is not a bug. Simply smiting a champion with Challenging Smite does nothing worthy of an assist. The initial smite does not deal any damage nor does it apply any CC. It only reveals them and places a debuff on them that causes them to deal less damage to you and take bonus damage when you attack them. Neither of those is worthy of an assist in the games eyes.
Challenging smite doesn't do any damage, it just grants vision which does not give assist credit.
