Tahm Kench cannot use his W on Ryze

Tried to use my W on a friendly Ryze last game, but the ability simply would not activate, no matter how many times I pressed it. I was able to use other abilities on him, such as a Face of the Mountain shield, and he was able to jump inside me during my ult. But I could not use my W on him no matter what. I'm not sure if it works on an enemy Ryze, but it worked on every other champion that was in that game. The sound effect wouldn't play, no animations either; it simply treated Ryze as a non-entity (like trying to eat a friendly minion).
