There seems to be no prerequisite to it. I have tried Sona and it works, changing keystones (that Karma had Stoneborn Pact when i saw it), but I was still able to use it with other keystones as well.

The difference is you don't get the execute from it, you have to last hit the minions.

The item has never been melee only

This was supposed to work. Thresh has it as a usual buy, they still need to lasthit.

ANYONE CAN USE THE GOLD SHARE PART GOD DAM PEOPLE! The only part that is melee only is the execute to kill the minion early. How do people not understand this item yet? It's been out for so long.

Not with auto attacks though. Range champions had to use abilities to get it. But now they can use it with auto attacks.

Ranged champs were always allowed to have Relic Shield, they just don't have the execute passive.

Example: Thresh

The only thing that doesn't triggered on ranged champs is the extra death threshold. Ranged champions have always been able to trigger Relic Shield so long as they got the kill. They just made it easier to get the kill on melee champions.
