There seems to be no prerequisite to it. I have tried Sona and it works, changing keystones (that Karma had Stoneborn Pact when i saw it), but I was still able to use it with other keystones as well.

The item has never been melee only

TheLastShadow452 votesANYONE CAN USE THE GOLD SHARE PART GOD DAM PEOPLE! The only part that is melee only is the execute to kill the minion early. How do people not understand this item yet? It's been out for so long.

ModWulf Helhammer3 votesThey have always been able to use the gold share passive, if not always than at least for several seasons now. But they don't get the execute to make it easier, only melee do.

Example: 
The5lacker1 votesThe only thing that doesn't triggered on ranged champs is the extra death threshold. Ranged champions have always been able to trigger Relic Shield so long as they got the kill. They just made it easier to get the kill on melee champions.
