You buy your item first and then the left over money is for wards. Just make sure you upgrade your trinket by the time you hit level 10.

Always try to make room for wards, unless you literally can only afford an item (in which case you're probably losing lane or you're an adc who only has enough for BF sword, but in the latter case you probably should have farmed to afford at least a pink as well). Vision wins games. It's also important to deep ward. Deep warding can save your life, as well as the life of the laner in the adjacent lane. This is doubly true if the enemy jungler is someone like a Shaco or an Evelynn. Deep warding fucks with Shaco, and pink wards fuck with both.

Always try to upgrade your trinket at level 9.

To be honest, my opinion is that you should ALWAYS ward. I always watch how much gold I have before I recall back to the fountain, that way I can ensure that I have enough gold for what I need to purchase before I go back. If you are getting ganked and caught out by the other team, investing your gold into wards is the best way to reduce that chance. A stealth ward is 3.5 minions. A vision ward is less than 5 minions. Every summoner can have 3 stealth wards and a single vision ward on the Rift at any point in time. Even if your team just uses their trinkets, you can ward the lane you are farming or pushing and keep yourself safe enough to stay alive. But if you don't want to spend the 250 gold to upgrade your trinket at level 9 and don't think that it is important to use 3.5 minions or 5 minions to keep yourself alive, your team deserves to lose (which the chances are very high of without vision).

Here's a good rule of thumb to work by-- After you finish your first intermediate item buy a pink ward and put it somewhere on the map. EX: item 3108 , item 1038, item 3077 , item 3144, item 3057

If your pink ward dies at any point, replace it on your next recall. PS: This pink ward rule applies to ADCs as well. Don't skimp on pink wards they're invaluable. Pink wards help your jungler gank your lane and it helps you roam in addition to keeping you safe from enemy ganks. They're just all around super efficient to purchase.

Between levels 9 and 13, upgrade your yellow trinket for the stealth wards. Only purchase it when it doesn't get in the way of completing your next item, but if you're ever walking off the fountain with 250+ gold after level 9 without upgrading it then you're making a big mistake. If you make it to level 13 and you haven't been able to purchase it (unlikely) then just bite the bullet and delay your next item a little. The utility from it will pay off very quickly.

If you ward, you have info on the enemy team. You can pick out and kill someone who is wandering around without knowledge that you know where they are and you can 3v1 that person for a 100% kill. Not to mention, it can save your life if you are split pushing for example, and you see the enemy trying to do that to you. Then there is the topic of objective control, keeping a constant eye on dragon and the surrounding area, ect. Those picks can help you snowball the game.

They pay off in the long run, and if you upgrade your totem, you will make a lot of profit from picks and help preventing the enemy from killing you. Pink wards help a lot too, there are some places that they can go that will give you a lot of vision and they won't get killed straight away. I recommend you look into ward placement.

Here is actually a good vid for maximizing the ward usage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvcCkeh_zgU

Wards nearly always pay for themselves, either in your ability to get a kill or you ability to avoid being killed. Remember that wards not only help you get more gold but also deny the other team from getting as much gold.
