It's actually not bad if you are going blue ezreal due to the fact that it costs less than bloodthirster and because its helpful in regaining mana when your manamune depletes your mana bar. Another thing to note is that the new red elixer give 10% lifesteal against champions so you are basically trading the shield for a mana passive. If you dont know what the blue build is it is the following: CDR boots, Essence Reaver (as of patch 4.20), Manamune, Iceborn Gauntlets, and Last Whisper. You pick up a defensive item (usually GA or QSS or occasionally banshees if they have something like malph or amumu) for your last item. The build works because you get 40% cdr (assuming you grab the 5% cdr from offence) and iceborn and manamune let you just spam your q and kite for years. Assuming you maxed e second, it is almost impossible to touch you mid-late game because your q has a 2.8 second cd (reduced by 1 if you hit it) and your e is something like 6 or 8 seconds. Your q hits like a truck because of manaune (around 500ish on nontanks) altho you dont have to worry if your teams arent gonna peel, you sacrifice damage since triforce gives more burst and damage and you dont buy any crit such as IE. So it basically comes down to if you want utility poke and cc, or just straight damage. Altho he doesn't have a ton of damage, he actually surprisingly does alot due to the fact that he casts abilities more and he can usually cast is ult twice in teamfights since its like on a 45 second cd and is reduced by 1 every time you land a q.

TL;DR: Only build essence reaver if you are going blue ez. If you want to know how to play blue ez read the paragraph above.

I think Ezreal is better off with a Muramana and Bloodthirster. Maramana provides a lot of damage; hint, it's not mana that makes Muraman viable. Stacking tear takes time and power out of your early game but it's worthwhile for a reason. Meanwhile Essence Reaver is a sub par Bloodthirster...

If you don't like playing tear ezreal builds you're probably going trinity force which has some nice bonus mana, aren't you? Again, Essence Reaver seems unnecessary here.

Essence Reaver first..? I don't know. The item does not compete with other items damage wise. Later in the game mana should not be an issue and so the bloodthirster shield is just better utility.

I have tried using it lately and literally couldnt find to much of a reason to even include it on a build, but since Im still not that good at the game I wanted to get some other input first. My normal build was sheen into trinity first then work some damage then my iceborn. Since I had been trying to see if essence reaver was worth it I had been running all kinds of builds lately for crap damage when all was said and done. The only one it even seemed halfway decent on was a TF, IE, Statik, Essence, LW, and of course my boots. but even then It just never seemed to hold up very well. Thanks guys!

I build CD Boots, Tri-Force, Essence Reaver, Blood Thirster, Last Whisper, and then Infinity Edge. Your Q's hit so hard :D.

YES. If i can, i rush essence reaver into infinity edge (patch 4.21). Then, it's up to the player to make it work, because this gives you everything you need to play an influential AD Ezreal on the rift. DON'T forget about your passive. It is massively important with any AD Ez.

Build first? Not Essence Reaver.

Ezreal has one of the most varied potential item pathways of any champion in the game. There are three questions you want to ask yourself before every game: 1: Blue or not? If blue, Tear->Sheen->Manamune. Depending on what you need, finish Iceborn or build a BotRK. Essence Reaver can fit in as a later game item that you are buying for the CDR to hit that sweet sweet 40%, not as early Lifesteal. If not blue...

2: 13-15 minute power spike? Trinity rush. Phage is generally the best first buy, but Sheen can also be strong. Transition into BotRK and standard ADC items.

3: 20-25 minute power spike? Tear-Trinity-Manamune->Normal ADC stuff. The Tear first will make your lane after first buy hell, but you will seriously wreck face when Muramana pops with your Trinity.

Most Ezreal builds end up with a BotRK so they don't really want Reaver. But that 10% CDR can be very strong on Ezreal in non-BotRK games. But you can only really afford to get it after your major power spikes, because Ezreal is one of those super item-spike based ADCs.

Into IE? I think I am taking this wrong, Essence doesnt build into IE, so your saying grab Essence first then grab IE?
