Does playing with unlocked camera helps you improve. I played lol for 3 years on locked camera so should I learn to play with unlocked?

Personally I do not think it makes a meaningful difference with the majority of champions. If you are playing something like a Xerath then you need to move the camera for his ult. Mostly though it is more about comfort. If you feel you have enough visual information with the camera locked then that is better than the disorientation changing camera styles for better vision will cause you.

That being said, try out playing with the camera unlocked for a game or three. Only you can really decide which one is better for your play.

I think it's better to play unlocked and manually lock with spacebar situationally, but I have some higher elo friends who play on locked so it's not like it's going to hold you back

Yes it is much more helpful. At first it's quite difficult to get used to it, but then you get used to it. You don't always use your mouse to move the screen, most of the time you'll hold spacebar to lock the screen (like you're playing now). Then, if you're planning on staying somewhere for a while (like CSing), you can move your screen to the best location.

Without locked camera, you can't Lux laser with such precision, or cait ult when it's passed your regular vision on locked camera, etc. It's a big obstacle, but you'll get used to it, I promise. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there isn't really a reason not to play on unlocked.
