Ryze vs Jax: tips on kiting

Sorry if this is a noob question, but while I understand Ryze is supposed to counter Jax, I'm struggling as a Ryze player to deal with Jax, especially early game. It's frustrating because I'm aware that Jax's early-mid game is supposed to be very weak.

I'm having trouble kiting him, because his leap strike outranges everything I've got, and my ms is so slow that he can still stun me even if I snare him by activating counterstrike before leaping to me.

So what happens is, when I go to poke him, he immediately activates his stun and leaps on me. I snare him and try to walk away but the stun still hits me because Ryze ms is so abysmal it goes off before I get enough distance. A few more hits + ignite and I'm dead.

I've looked at some videos of pros playing this matchup, but the jax never tries these all-ins against them. All the tips I've read on the matchup imply that kiting jax is easy and they don't go in-depth.

What am I missing here? How do I keep him off me?

If Jax jumps on you, you reply by walking backwards. After his stun goes off, you W, move just out of melee range, and get as many spells and autos off as you can. After Jax has blown E, he can do nothing to stick to you for a long time.

It will feel a bit scary as his damage is pretty frontloaded, but as long as you get as many abilities off as you can you will win the trade handily early game.

Make sure you don't just let him walk away after QE. You have to put damage back on him.

OP, biggest mistake there is using Rune Prison right when he jumps on you. Here are situations to look for in this matchup...

  1. If he starts his disarm, immediately start backing away. Most will do this right before leapstrike, so keep an eye on it and react quickly.

  2. If he does leap to you, save your Rune Prison for AFTER his stun goes off. If you use it right as he jumps, he'll still get the stun off with you in melee range and be able to beat on you even while snared since Rune Prison isn't a stun, just a snare. If you use the Rune Prison as soon as you are released from his stun, you can out trade him as you walk away and he's forced to run back while you pummel him. Basically without leap he has no sticking power.

  3. Positioning. If he's playing aggressive, make sure to stay in the middle of your minions. This way if situation #2 happens above, he'll also be taking damage from your minions as soon as he autos you. At early levels, minion damage is HUGE and can easily lead to him getting killed by minion aggro. Keep in mind that your Q does NOT trigger minion aggro, just your autos. Feel free to hit him with Q as often as you want.

The only other thing to get used to is how much damage he can do at a given level. You want to make sure to look at his items so you know when you are safe to survive his all-in and when he has kill potential. Ryze is a little weak early, so play carefully. Don't worry about spamming abilities once you have your tear. Don't be afraid to use your ult for waveclear as well since it's CD is so short.

hope this helps.
