Building Items

I'm not the best at building items and usually copy Mobafire builds. I want to learn about items so I can build accordingly, like is it better to buy a Shiv as the third item when playing Vayne or a Phantom Dancer? I'm 1/3 and Akali and the enemy Azir is 3/1 should I buy Abyssal Rod?

I don't know much about these kind of things and I'll appreciate it if you link me to a video or thread that discusses these kind of things.

Vayne rarely wants to build Shiv. This is because Shiv is a wave clearing item more then a DPS increasing item. Vayne is a duelist, and one of the strongest at it. He single target damage in insanely high. Extra mobility and the ability to move through minions really helps her out play opponents. I suppose...if your entire team has no wave clear at all then you might want it but her short range makes even that 1 AA on incoming waves dangerous

Akali often wants Abyssal "Scepter" because the early flat MR reduction works really well with her assassin kit. Remember with that and sorc boots you are taking 35 MR away which will often give you true/near true damage against enemy carries. Against Azir with his high area control having that MR also helps you survive entering his zone control. Abyssal Scepter is a great item for melee AP assassins because of the ability to tank a little extra and deal extra damage. However, if Azir is ahead by a lot 1 item isn't going to make a huge difference. When he gets too far ahead look to roam and gank enemy lanes to catch up and just catch your waves when you can.

Any other item questions?

Thanks for the answer. I can't really think of any other items on the top of my head but I sometimes see some laners getting 2 or 3 Doran Rings/Blades and I'd like to know how that works and how long they would keep those extra items.

Extra doran blades are picked up in limited situations. The most common is if you get a level 1 kill and want to apply extra pressure in lane. Another reason is if you fall behind early lvls 2-4 and don't have enough for pickaxe but need something to keep up with your opponent who is getting pickaxe or better. Keep in mind this only works for AD champions.

Doran rings are built for the above reasons but can also be built in multiple early level to apply early pressure and gain more sustain with mana because the passive mana gain stacks. This is most common with champions that need that mana sustain but it isn't very common and if you manage your mana well you don't need them and can buy Tear or catalyst instead for mana.

You want to work towards not needing to buy extra doran though. Use your AA more as an AP mid to last hit CS and if you trade well you shouldn't need extra doran blades due to having enough CS gold to buy pickaxe or better.
