My buddy mentioned that he was able to turn on quick cast and is able to press (and hold) an ability and can see the path of the ability before actually letting go of the button. Does anybody know how to do this?

In the settings > hotkeys page, at the very bottom is box to check to show range indicators with quickcasting. The spell casts on release of the key, and if you press and hold it down before releasing, it shows the range indicators.
Look for the option titled "show range indicators for smartcast" that should do it.
