soraka tips and tricks!

Hey guys, I thought we could use the new forums to swap advice on everyone's favorite banambulance, soraka. I've played a fair amount (to mixed success) and I'd love to see what ideas you guys have on how to play her.

  1. Offensive runes. (And consider buying spellthief's edge). I know it's tempting to get tank stats (armor and regen) and an ancient coin, but I've found a more offensive set up to be stronger through the lane phase. Healing is great, but zoning them off your carry with some damaging q's could save both of you a lot of life ( not to mention the health you get back).

  2. E has the second highest base damage of any non - ultimate spell behind maokai's sapling. Okay. That's not a tip but that's insane. True you have to land it and get the root off, but at level 5 that's 480 damage +.8ap. What. Strongly consider ranking this early.

  3. Communicate with your carry. I mean, this is a given most of the time, but it's especially important on soraka because unlike most lanes, your hit points are more valuable than the carry's. Make sure your carry knows this.

  4. Ask for help warding. Soraka may be the weakest champion alone in the entire game. Wandering into a random bush is even more dangerous than it is for, say, Janna. Ask for help!

  5. Watch your minimap. Your ultimate is one of your greatest early game tools and it can turn a fight to plane if your timing is good.

Any of you guys have any good tips for the unicorn?

another tip to add is that her Q falls faster the closer it is to her... if you drop it on her face its basically instant where as at max range its like a half second delay making it more ideal as a peel than a poke

also landing her Q first allows you to more easily hit the root on the E if you can guess where the enemy is gonna run to.

she desperately needs more tanky items now since her kit is more or less healbot oriented. Going full ap or not building items like spirit visage can really put you in a bad place.

her ult removing grievous wounds makes it ideal for saving allies who are ignited

So, this seems an appropriate place for a question about Soraka even if it isn't a tip.

I read a build that seemed to believe that the healing portion of Q is only related to the rank of Q and to save W till the end of leveling if you're screwing around as a mid. I thought the healing was related to the rank of W, was the guide just misinformed or am I reading the tool tips wrong?

Also, I'm a newb, I literally only have played comp stomp up to level 12 trying out different champs to find one to main and get flash. Would Soraka be a good choice to start dabbling in PvP with?

I've always loved healers in mmo's and other games, and with the changes I love the managing your own health while damaging and cc'ing that she brings with good healing to boot. I just don't want to focus on her and find it being time wasted because she is useless later on.

Thanks for any help :)

Soraka is brilliant in counter engages. Able to negate a large chunk of AoE damage imploding on your team in an instant allows her a rather unique ability to dismantle a large portion of a team's damage if your team finds themselves in a bad situation. So here are a few tips i've been finding...

  1. Rylai's Crystal Scepter is an incredibly useful item for giving you catch potential, and increasing the chance of Landing your E root. (Rylai's will only apply a 15% slow on all of raka's abilities do to their AoE nature)

a. When being chased, place E preemptively. The root is after 1.5 seconds regardless of time it silences enemies. E's damage is instant, and with Rylais will immediately provide the slow if you tag someone with it. While not exactly enough to keep them in, it can help lead your Q for a nail in the coffin.

b. Starcall will only apply its slow if you hit the Sweet Spot in the center. If you are being chased account for the increased projectile speed since you are aiming shorter. Proper placement will allow you to kite chasing enemies really well, and combined with E can lead to some easy roots. Since hitting the Sweet spot is nigh impossible at high range without being dodged, Rylai's will help you make your Qs count, even if you just tag someone with them.

  1. Regarding Starcall, Targetting Q is really difficult at high range, since it travels so slowly. If you can safely close the distance it will greatly increase your chances of hitting its sweet spot damage, which is much much higher than its outer ring, and also what justifies its rather high mana cost. If you can trick your enemy into being hit by your sweet spot, (Try looking for their dodge habits like left or right preference) and keep your cursor rather close to them so they accidentally walk into the center while trying to get out. a. Even just a clip can be greatly beneficial for Soraka, as the passive heal from W gives her an incredible amount of lane sustain if she can even so much as clip her opponents. Your heal return is delayed however, which can be useful for regenerating health after a trade, but makes it unreliable in saving you from burst. ** (Keep this in mind since Raka has a .5sec cast time on all abilities. don't go for a self heal if you don't feel you can live a hit if you take it, or if the resulting slow won't protect you)**

b. Hitting Starcall on multiple opponents gives you a large amount of healing. Clustered enemies in teamfights will allow you to sustain for more healing if you are low, assuming you can safely harass them with it. Because of the amount of self-heal you can get this way, Raka can stay in fights longer than you might think, so long as she isn't in danger of being closed upon via gapclosers.

  1. Astral Infusion will cost you more health the more HP you have. This makes tanking items less effective while you heal, as your overall healing output is lowered, as opposed to AP which increases the potency of each heal. A healthy mix of both should be used to keep yourself alive, and healing as effectively as possible. Resistances are super important to Soraka for this reason.

a. Don't spam her heal if you can't keep it up. No need to kill yourself to keep Vayne at 100% when you can maintain her while she's in peril without dying yourself. You can only self heal with Q off enemies, so topping allies off should only be necessary if you feel they might need it, or you can do without the hp. Remember that Allies are tastier at low Hp, and if they aren't getting bursted your Sustain will KEEP them tasty. Also your Ult is more effective on allies at low hp.

Do not lose half your health before the fight starts cause you thought showing off your Cds was nifty

  1. WISH this is your #TrollSwag. Its a reverse Karthus ult that makes you the envy of your team, and able to get assists from cross the map. Map awareness is key, be sure to keep track of your allies, and decide whether a Wish could get them a kill, or whether they're fucked.

Ok I know it seem weird but I found it on reddit and it worked for me; I rush a tiamat.

First it allow me to start with 2 beads. 10hp5 is about 3%hp5 around level 1. This allow me to cast about 1 extra heal per 15 seconds. It is an unreal sustain for your adc who can trade for days at low level. Tiamat is the only item that build form bead and don't have max HP linked to it.

In fact tiamat and then hydra are the only items that provide hp5 without health. And max health is bad because if you pull that build right i swear guys, you can chain 30 heal in a single back. This mean during that sequence you pay 300% of your max health. That turn any health item into a negative double effect item. a warmog reduce your health by 2000hp for exemple. And a rylai's (since I saw that above) reduce it by 800hp. You dont want that on an health regen soraka...

Once you finish your tiamat, you retrieve 15hp5. which is about 2.5%hp5. An heal every 20 seconds... Once again get a power spike and can spam heal just like it cost nothing... The AD is not your best stat of course and you have no use of the passive. But you can still use the AD to some extent. You can also manage to cs correctly when you cover a lane which is quite good. AAAAND "Yes ! that was a banana" taunt kills.

I don't stragiht build the hydra from the tiamat, but the life steal it gives later allow you to more or less double the hp5 you already have. Still about 2-2.5%hp5 even in late game. Still allow a ton more heal then it should... knowing that your heal produce 2.5x your own health and you pay 10% of you health. It mean every heal can gives a squishy 25% of his health back. In other words, you can nearly heal an extra champion from 0 to 100% every minutes with that item only. You can't go wrong with that... it's both gold and slot efficient.

Only prerequisite for it to work : No hp item at all. Otherwise the effect would dilute quite quickly. Maybe a spirti visage... if anything...
