I've been trying to learn Gnar over and over again, yet every way I learn him fails. Anyone got any tips?

Thanks! -Vursyy

Learn to adjust your build depending on the lane. If you learn the lane match ups you should be able to win in almost all of them even against the harder ones. He is squishy early on in mini-gnar but you can use his ranged poke to farm and do damage to laner. Make sure you always catch your Q whenever possible. Also don't use your E offensively unless you know where the enemy jungler is or you have wards and know he's not nearby. Its your escape and if things go sour you want it to get out. There are many different starts you are going to have to do with him and a lot of different builds. I personally like having frozen mallet on him depending on if i can build it in lane or if i have to build it later, it helps catch people out and gives you a lot of hp. It also helps you chunk down people because of your w passive. Also people are scared of big Gnar so make sure you try to get your stun off with him when in Mega form. Most important part is make plays with your Mega-Gnar form. If you are getting to mid-late game you will have to learn to control your rage bar and make sure you can use your ult to help cc the opponents.

I suggest using smart cast with indicators. You get the reactiveness of smart cast but you still keep the information from indicators; this can help you predict your boomerang rebound.

Personally I've found much more consistency with 9-21-0 masteries rather than 21-9-0 on Gnar. That may just be me. I frequently run ad marks and attack speed quints. Seals are armor, glyphs are matchup dependent (flat mr, scaling mr, or cdr)

Contrary to what you may hear mini Gnar is quite weak early game. My normal skillpath Q - W- E by level 3. Trade with Q, double auto combos. Respect enemy ranged creeps when trading, minions aggro when you AA champions (abilities do not aggro minions). Maybe kill a ranged creep first if your opponent lets you. This will start a slow push toward enemy tower, but pushing can be advantageous in lane early game because you get a momentary minion and exp advantage. Don't push too quickly to tower so you can milk your advantage longer and your opponent can't just turtle near his tower. Time when you clear the wave so the waves don't get stuck just in front of his tower.

So you know what pushing does. But let's say your opponent froze his minions outside his tower. As Gnar this can be ok. He gets reinforcements from base quicker and this may cause lane to push back toward you. When your opponent is too strong or has too many minions you can get farm at a distance with your Q. This is helpful in tough matchups before you get tanky. When a minion wave is stronger it naturally pushes.

Kind of matchups I consider difficult for Gnar: Irelia Fiora Vladimir Riven Kind of matchups that are fairly advantageous for Gnar: Hecarim Maokai Renekton Malphite Shyvana You can't expect to solo kill good Nasus's tier: Nasus

Your ability to farm and build the correct items is very important for Gnar!

VS. AP (easy lane or aggressive) item 1036 + item 2003 -> item 3155 VS. AP (hard lane) item 1036 -> item 3211 and possibly lifesteal. Sustain is good vs. mana reliant champs VS. melee AD (assuming challenged in lane) ... lots of options, I really like item 3044 item 3047 , mobility and combat stats on the cheap. item 3022 is great in some games. item 1011 can be helpful in lane. I guess I don't build item 3134 often anymore. A couple extra item 1055 can be good on ocassion depending on when you recall and how hard the lane is. VS. a ranged AD champion consider starting item 1054 or item 1029 + item 2003 5 VS. super tanks go item 3144 -> item 3153 or item 3044 and counter resists. Finish item 3071 or item 3078 later (item 3071 cheaper and helps the team, item 3078 is nice when you're really fed, lets you dps squishies as mini gnar easier)

Typically only have 1 finished damage item. Or two incomplete ones. I make sure I am tanky enough to initiate and survive fights.

If you didn't know Gnar works best as a tanky fighter. I see you've built a lot of ADCarry items on your Gnar lately. Because Gnar is short ranged or even melee sometimes it's difficult to make a full damage Gnar work. Trust me, Gnar is still deadly and fun to play as a bruiser dps champ.

Your builds should look something like this

item 3078 item 3143 item 3111 item 3102 item 3075 item 3026

or maybe like

item 3071 item 3065 item 3047 item 3143 item 3083 item 3153

A site I find very useful is http://www.probuilds.net/ It's a guide, but again it's not. It's basically very detailed information of how pros play that champion. They tell you the item purchases and when each component were bought, the team he was playing in and the score he went (if you wanna analyze team comp.), the runes, masteries, skill distribution.

Give it a try: http://www.probuilds.net/champions/Gnar

Jungle gnar i'm not too sure, just kite the jungle creeps and get cinderhulk, and you have decent ganks with red buff and slow on your q i guess. For top lane against riven, build some defensive items early, i don't like damage on gnar too much because his w passive is so strong by itself. Riven you just have to bait her dash, then if she trys to all in you, soon as she goes forward you jump away with your e. you'll have to play safe when your e is down but you can farm from a distance in mini. Try cloth 5 against her or ruby crystal, back early for a cloth and some more health pots. This is all depending on how good the riven is. I've dabbled with smite/tp gnar top and it works wonders against riven because she cannot kill you if you have red smite and cinderhulk. Up to you but try it out when you feel more comfortable with gnar! The frozen mallet build helps you kite people a lot especially those with a gap closer. Remember if riven doesn't get a kill early, then when it comes to late game you can CC her with your w and ult and make her worthless in a team fight!

Don't listen to this guy talking about gnar being bad, He's been nerfed a little in the past but he is still very viable if you know how to use him. Sure there are other champs that can also tank but you could say that about any champ in the game, so if you enjoy gnar don't let someone say he's a trash champ, definitely one of the beset top laners in the game as of now.

Top lane gnar is better, Jungle gnar can work but its more of an off-meta pick and you have to know it's ins and outs for it to work at all, because there is no semi working with jungle gnar.

I'm just gonna say I'm not pro as gnar, not even my main, but i got a few tips; when you're top mostly people are melee, you are ranged as mini gnar so basic attack and/or Q if you think you are in a good position to catch it to punish them for CS in lane, for fights i try to pick off people who wander away from they're team as mega gnar, because that E R Q W combo is strong under tower or anywhere really, so if you see someone split pushing (as long as they're not fed unless they're under tower) combo them if you're mega gnar, or lure them deep into you're jungle as mini gnar, then your team can follow up or you just kite them until either they're low enough for you to jump on them and kill them or if you turn into mega gnar jump on them, they will probably be low from your kiting so as long as your ultimate is up, you can kill them and they don't have to be as low as they have to be for the mini gnar kite strategy (unless they're fed), as for team fights, i mostly hang back and poke until i go mega and if i see a opportunity to E R Q W combo they're team i take it. okay that's it, i don't play gnar a lot, so this may or may not work, but if it helps let me know and if it doesn't let me know.

please check out my assassin update ideas by searching; assassin ideas or kha'zix update idea and how to counter, thanks!

I tend to rush a item 3153 on Gnar (Cutlass first) and then build full tank after that, you want to initiate with the hop-passive-ult and then throw your stun and Q in while the enemy/enemies are still stunned from the ult

My advice? Play someone else. That's the worst champ in the game. He's called Gnarbage for a reason.
