Keep at least 1 pink ward up every time whether you're adc, mid, jungle or top.

You just need to know where to place them, I heard that placing them under your towers gives you the best value because they will be protect at all times.
I heard you can determine what tier players are on by counting how many pink wards are on th map
Bronze ~ Silver 01 pink ward
Goldsplats 2~4 pink wards
Diamonds+ always 5 pink wards lol
Pink wards last the whole match unless you play against really good players. I normally buy one at my first back and drop it in a bush somewhere in the river and it lasts for 25+ minutes.
To add on: Keep an eye out for enemy's that come to destroy pink ward. Advance the pink wards when your "side" of the map has advanced further.

I always have a pink ward up, I mean, think about it. If you destroy an enemy ward, you wasted their 75g while gaining 30g and make your pink at a normal ward cost while also deny the enemy money

There was a time when we didn't have trinkets. Pinks are a waste of gold. Use your map, brain, and trinket the right spot at the right time. Too complicated for some though. If your supp has a sightstone he can give vision of your entire jungle with 3 wards, but some people still don't know where to place them. Then have your teammates trinket enemy jung...? Profit
Problem is I always forget until I have full build :P
