Poppy is absolute trash early game, and this is coming from someone who plays poppy alot. Poppy is an excellent jungler, though, and her late game is much, much scarier than Riven's.
Easiest way to kill Riven: Don't let her get a kill early game.
are faceroll champs with high damage and no utility. Their gameplay revolves around getting fed early and steamrolling the enemy team for the rest of the game. If they aren't fed, then they have nothing to bring to their team and will fall off HARD.
Basically you want to play passively. Practice freezing the lane at your tower and be prepared for any ganks, friendly or not. If you don't get the ganks you need early Riven will be able to free farm regardless of whether you let her or not, so play it safe and don't give her kills. You're Poppy, you don't need to trade, you just need to survive and farm up until you can one shot whoever is unlucky enough to be on your bad side. Riven will want to poke you down so she can safely all in you later on, where as you just need to avoid her poke until you have the damage you need.
You will want to be warding really well, not just to avoid ganks but because you absolutely have to follow Riven if she roams. If she gets free kills while you are just farming she will become a menace the rest of your team likely won't be prepared for. Until you are very confident about your ability to lane against Riven Ignite is a spell you should avoid. Take teleport and keep an eye out for easy kills you can take from other lanes. KSing is your friend in the laning phase, just try not to do it to any lane that is behind enough to be a detriment later on. If they complain don't worry, they will thank you when you dive 1v5 under the enemy tower, murder their carries, and stroll out without a care in the world.
I tried to play extremely passively as GP, only getting CS with Parrrley and staying back otherwise; still didn't work, her gap closing and burst was far too good and wrecked me. I'm just 100% not the guy you want in top lane -_- back to bot lane I go. Will read the responses, maybe something will click and I won't be Worst Top NA.
You ever try to play someone that doesn't give a crap about her damage? Someone like Maokai or Mundo who just sustain through all of it and will eventually out tank her so much she can't do anything to you?
alot of you said to farm but i said when i try to farm she stuns me and i cant do anything making me miss farm and i do try to freeze lane by last hitting but most rivens push and get lvl 2 first and go all in taking half my health so i cant farm
you just have to learn how to position around what she's doing. give up some creeps, it's not the end of the world if you get zoned from the creep as long as you get exp. any time she goes for a creep, it's relatively safe for you to take one. if taking a creep will cost you 1/2 your hp, it's not worth it, so just stay in the exp zone.
another thing to do is to not let her "hard" push at lvl 1 if you can stop it. Try to get a few autos on the creeps at lvl 1 before she starts pushing. If she immediately tries to trade with you, walk backwards and a little away from the creeps so her qs dont push the wave and dmg you at the same time. get some aas in and get a q in.
if she hits lvl 2 first, you have to just get exp and wait for it to shove near to tower unless her q is on cd. understand that the cd is ~10-13 seconds from her 1st q early game, no matter when she uses the rest. so if she blows all right away, you have a large window, if she spreads them out there's only a little one. either way, she's a lot more mobile than you. if the lane is remotely near the middle of the wave, she can chase you down. so anywhere that you can't get back to the tower before she can full combo or even 1/2 combo you is overextended.
know that you can always trade at least a little as poppy. assuming you start flask+3, you can just q her when she tries to trade, then pot and do it again. you might run oom before you can kill her, but the pots and trade dmg should help you stay more relevant in lane. also, if she's remotely pushed and is EVER between you and your tower, you can just shove her into its range with wall slam. worth it every time.
basically, you just have to learn how to give up creeps when you cant get them, and get creeps when she can't deny them. never let her get free dmg on you, always trade. and since you should ahve more pots than her, as long as you don't get all-in'd the lane should be pretty even.
Poppy is a trash champ, with no way to win lane. You need a camping jungler, and make sure you don't die. Roam mid for ganks and pick offs, don't die, and buy trinity force asap.
Poppy has issues with early game fighting in general. Against Riven, I would recommend the following.
Runes:
Masteries: 21/9/0 or 9/21/0
Starting Items:
Skill Order:
Summoner Spells:
With this setup, you should have around 73-81 armor at level one and plenty of sustain for the lane . In the lane, you probably want to focus on farming instead of trying to trade with her since Riven is manaless and Poppy has high mana costs. Don't be afraid to lose minions which are too risky to kills and try to keep the minion wave under or outside of your tower.
Phage (for health and AD) or Vampiric Scepter are good early purchases for additional survivability/sustain in lane. Phage can be built into Trinity Force and Vampiric Scepter can be built into Ravenous Hydra or Blade of the Ruined King.
If you are really having trouble or most of their team is physical damage, Iceborn Gauntlet can be a good first item for the armor, slow, and spellblade.
try cho as a melee champ he works really well against her, I am not sure about poppy though sorry
Lv. 1 - She's usually able to be traded against with any champ just try not to get hit by all 3 Q's Lv. 2- Doesn't matter if she got W or E you probably wont win a trade unless you're like garen or something Lv. 3-5- Just farm and try not to lose trades too badly Lv. 6- Hope that the person playing Riven already has a headache so they can't smash their face on the keyboard.
Some match ups are just way too in the favor of someone.
Riven vs Poppy is one of these, Riven is extremely good early and can snowball out of control, Poppy is extremely weak early and is a late game monster when farmed.
Your best bet is to let Riven push to your tower and just skirt EXP range of minions and then last hit under your tower until you have your Tri-Force and can fight back some. Wait for the jungler to come help you since she is likely pushing.
If she is freezing the lane, go take a jungle camp or go roam mid and get a kill. Poppy is the ultimate tower diver, run from behind their tower and charge them into your team mate.
There isn't some magic build or play style that will let you beat Riven in a 1v1 fight early.
If you hate Riven that much you can play
and make her cry.
