Is Rengar Worth Buying?

I've been practicing top and jungle recently with the hopes of getting into ranked at the start of next season. Seeing as those are my two weakest lanes, I've been looking to champions that can fit both roles easily and do well. I've turned and eye to the Knife-Cat and I'm unsure if he is worth the buy. Personally, I don't see him much in games, but when I do, a good portion of the time he does sub- par, other times it's astounding to watch him work. So, I thought of picking him up for myself.

I'm more than wiling to sit down and really learn the mechanics of Rengar, but I want to know if it's going to be worth it if I'm going to make this investment. So is Rengar worth the buy as a jungle and top lane pick? Or is this ultimately going to be a waste of my IP, if I end up buying and busting?

Rengar sees plenty of play even at the highest levels as a jungler. I do not use him myself however.

He's more than viable as a laner for average play. There are far far worse choices

Rengar's a viable choice in both top and jungle, but much better suited for jungle. The reason for that is his fairly weak early game vs someone with decent sustain or high damage (most bruisers/tanks that you'll see in top lane) who will push you into turret and keep you there. Rengar needs bush control in a lane to be really effective. Keeping in mind, he's built off of stealth and his passive gap close from the bush. Though, with that in mind, Kha'Zix is currently a stronger choice than Rengar is, especially if you can catch someone out of the group as Kha's Q does extra damage to isolated targets and he doesn't require a bush to leap onto his target. Also has a more effective slow with the evolved W.

All in all, worth buying if you can play him effectively and take proper advantage of overextensions.
