How do you handle Riven vs Volibear as Riven?

I came across this matchup in ranked, and during the laning phase I got completely destroyed. If I tried to harass or cs Voli would unleash his combo and wreck me. I got zoned for just about the entire laning phase, although I still did fine later since I'm fine at Riven (obviously I suck at some matchups, but I can animation cancel) and got fed cleaning up fights. How do I stop him from zoning me? How can I go even in this lane? Any suggestions on beating Voli in general would be nice as I've only laner against him a couple times. Thank you and please excuse any possible spelling errors - iPhone autocorrect op.

TL;DR Got beaten badly in lane by Volibear as Riven. Was pushed out of land and couldn't cs. Help me please.

Volibear is kind of an anti melee champion, can get very tanky and still duel you and even if you get close to killing him he has his passive. I suggest just playing safe and making plays elsewhere on the map. Or if you want to really win lane, don't try to all in him, like use your combo, then back off, bait out his passive and then finish him off if he's low enough.

Your combo hands down out damages his combo. Sounds like you let him do his combo on you with out retaliating at all. Your shield should soak up most of his damage he can do to you. Most of his combo is AAs, and your AAs should easily out match his. And your abilities EASILY deal more damage than his abilities, unless you are less than 25% health. He probably started cloth +5? or dorans shield? Which again, means your combos would out deal his untill you where below 25% HP.

This match-up is somewhat tough unless you get ahead of volibear in levels or get early ganking presence. The problem that riven has against volibear is volibear can be very tanky and still do alot of dmg to riven and his passive makes it much harder to be killed. When volibear uses his W on the minion wave, force trades with him. Never fight him when he has a bigger minion wave than you do. Try to bait out his passive and force an all-in with ignite once its on cooldown.

Riven's combo is just straight up more damaging and more versatile then Volibears. The only thing i can think of is you let him get his damage off on you without retaliation. His most damaging ability is his W, you know this is up when there is a Paw above his head. This move is a short ranged execute that does damage based on his HP. You want to use your shield on this to soak up the damage, which it will and then some (unless he is already fed...). If he runs at you to flip you there are several things you can do: 1) Run away; Even with his MS you can easily escape him. 2) Turn on him; You shield, CC, and damage are all better then his. 3) Just CC Him; If you are not comfortable fighting him and dont want to run/get zoned, just stun him then knock him up.

I have fought Riven a bunch of times as Volibear and honestly this is not an easy fight for Volibear. Regardless it is still somewhat of a skill match-up of who can time their abilities better, but seriously Riven's CC, Damage, Cooldowns, and Mobility are all better... even her execute is better.

Bit confused here because you guys are giving me different answers :/ and I was retaliating to his combos, I just wasn't doing any damage because he was too tanky before I was able to build armor pen... In this lane should Riven try to push the lane and roam maybe? Did I just do badly and should improve my lane presence? Is Volibear just a tad bit broken with his damage scaling on tankiness and ult giving him huge damage buff?
