If you go against a katarina, get zhonyas if your a mage.

most champs can get by with just a banshee's veil and good positioning. if you're laning against a strong AP like leblanc then you may want to rush a chalice of harmony to build an athenes. zhonya's hourglass is also good for negating burst if you time the active well.

It really depends on the champion you are trying to counter, and the champion that you are playing.

Generally, Items like are great vs a spell caster that really relies on the opening of their combo, as an initiator.

If you have built in healing in your kit, is your best bet.

If you are a tank/support, I would recommend to counter AoE based mages.

If you are a squishy trying to counter a certain CC that would spell your doom, Is the right answer. If you are AD, you can upgrade this.

If you are an AP, and just know you are going to need to either peel damage for a second or generally know how to anticipate the damage coming from skillshots/delayed damage, then definitely pick up .

If it's an AP Assassin, then is a great buy on any champion, as that not only will increase your durability, it will also allow you to come back from being instagibbed.

AoE lockdown CC?

Over all though, if you have extremely low HP, most of these won't help enough. APC's tend to be more affected by HP early on, and MR hurts more as a later buy.

Maw is the best buy if you're an AD bruiser.
