advice on purchasing a champion?

Hi people that have probably seen this question a bazillion times-

I've recently begun to play LoL and now I have enough IP points to purchase any champion. I'd like some advice on picking, as the last time I chose a champ (Mundo) it didn't work out.

I'm not too familiar with roles yet and I've stuck to twisted treeline for the majority of my games. From the current rotation I've mostly been using swain, which I really enjoy playing. I dunno if I should just grab him or wait and test out some more champs first. Is swain an alright champ for a scrub? Is there another character that'd be better? I love my ranged attacks and AoE. And healing abilities. Those are cool too. Advice appreciated. C:

And as bonus question, what determines the price of a champion? How good it is? How long it's been out? If I were to wait would it cost less to purchase a newly released champion?

If you are unaware, Riot offers 3 free skins for subscribing to their social media. And if you don't have the champion that skin is for, you get the champion free too!

Ok other than those, it depends on what you like. If you're looking for a ranged Mage like Swain Swain , you might also like Ahri Ahri , Cassiopeia Cassiopeia , or Ryze Ryze . Swain is much better at self healing than Cass or Ahri (Ryze has no innate ability to), but Ryze also builds Rod of Ages item 3027 which helps make both him and Swain tanky (a common role for playing Top Lane on Summoner's Rift map).

Ryze is a good pick, but I hear he's going to have some changes (remove mana scaling) done which could possibly take Rod of Ages or Seraph's Embrace item 3040 out of his normal build. I think you should pick up Swain since you like him, and ask about Ryze after he is changed.

ALWAYS go for the champion you enjoy playing the most. You MIGHT get lucky and end up loving the champion you bought at random (I love playing renekton, thresh, yasuo and Vi and Vi was the only one I played during free rotation) but it's safer to go with whoever you enjoy playing.

I thought Jax and Tryndamere would be fun to play and bought them, but they're botb extremely boring to play, for me atleast. You might like them, idk, but that just goes to show you that buying a champion at random simply cause you saw someone else play them well isn't the best idea especially if you're strapped on rRP or IP

Go for the champion you enjoy playing first.

Honestly if you like Swain then you should just buy him, then you'll always be able to play him.

Try out other champs when they're on the free rotation to get a feel for what you're into.

Nasus is another champ that's kind of similar to Swain
