So i am a mid laner who is not that good at the lane phase. I simply just dont know when i can trade and when i can avoid a lot of obvious damage. My biggest stregth i do have is mid-late game descion making which is why i often win some of my games. When the enemy goes in to CS, try to trade while they are in the middle of CSing, and you can usually get more damage on them then on yourself (maybe even get out unscathed). You also need to ward a lot. Wards are really important, especially in mid, since it's right in the middle of the map.
You also need to gauge your power in comparison to your opponent's power. You get good at learning when you won't be able to win a fight, and the segmented healthbar can help you do that by gauging an enemy's durability. You can also look at your opponent's items to get a rough estimate of how strong they are.
You should avoid picking the assassin type mid Laners and become more experienced with mages that can farm well. You can also roam to other lanes if you've chosen an ap with cc and just gank other lanes.
