Advice for beginners: how to answer the "ideal champion" question
Many new players often ask how to find their ideal champion that naturally clicks for them. Honestly, it's better to become proficient in two or three characters in all of the 5 roles, but having a main champion will defiantly help you enjoy the game more and will also help you climb faster in ranked once you reach lvl 30.
With that being said, here is my advice on how to find the ideal champion for you. Firstly, this WILL SWITCH because it's based off personal interest which may change over time. Now firstly, we have to start narrow the list down. It is much easier to choose one of the 5 preferred roles than one in dozens of characters. The roles are pretty self explanatory and you can look them up if you are not familiar.
Now keep in mind that the roles are versetile and each champion plays that respective role differently (a mage plays the role of mid laners differently than assasin). Thus, understand that the role may change based on your champion. Once you have chosen a role, you need to narrow down your role into its respective sub roles. For top laners are usually divided into tanks and fighters. These sub roles allow for further classification of what you would like to contribute to your team.
Now comes the actual champion selection portion. There are many champions for roles and sub-roles but they all perform them very differently. For example, if I was interested in playing mid lane as a mage, I have the choice of either playing characters that can dish out large amounts of damage from affar like xerath and ziggs or mages that can come very close to front lines of team fights and one-shot carries while still maintaining a safe distance like ahri and syndra.
At this point there should be 3 to 4 champions that fit your quota. Even though league of legends has many characters that all look different and have diverse abilities, there are some characters that work very similar. For example, sejuani and nautilus, though looking very different, they contribute the same general thing to their teams. They are both tank junglers who are able to use lots of crowd control on the enemies so their team can follow up for easy kills. They both also have abilites that increase in damage as their health increases. Thus someone who chooses the role of junglers and the sub role of tank junglers who enjoy lots of cc abilities can choose from one of these two. The main difference between the two is the fact that sejuani is more geared towards teamfight initiation (massive 5 man stun with well timed ult) while nautilus is geared more towards lane ganks or smaller fights(hook with stun, slow, and knock up makes escape a challenge, even with flash). Some other very similar champions for example are xerath and velkoz (insane ranged ap burst) , talon and zed (extremely mobile ad assasins with escapes) , and Diana and ekko( mage/assasins who can harass from affar or jump into front lines with annoying shields).
Using this method, you should be able to narrow down to your ideal champion. Thank you for reading.
