Question about "channeled abilities"

As a Janna main, I always shield my Caitlyn whenever she ults for the bonus ad... but I've wondered when the bonus ad actually takes effect, should I use it before she ults, while she's ulting, or when the bullet actually hits.

I also wonder the same things about buying in fountain if you have a global ult such as Ashe, Ez, Jinz, or Draven. If you buy an item that would increase the damage of your ult after you have already ulted, but it is still on the map, does that ult get the bonus ad/ap? And finally if level up a "channeled ability" as you channel it (including Lux's e, Janna's tornado), does it increase the effects for that channel?

Just something I've always wondered.

It actually depends on the skill. Some abilities do the math and carry it forward the second you cast the spell, while some calculate the second that damage is dealt.

For example, Malzahar's E even checks what level it is every time it ticks (Unleash one on a minion wave, rank up E, see what happens).

However, not every skill is like this, and it's often inconsistent. I think the majority of abilities check on impact for a champion's AD/AP. I believe that ranking up an ability after the cast typically does NOT improve the skill, though I'm a bit less certain on this one.

you could always get a friend and go test this in a custom with bots

generally it's inconsistent as fuck as to how this stuff works
