I never really understood the point behind this one.
I mean if you're going to do it.
AS Reds, Flat AP Quints or MoveSpeed Quints, Flat Armor Yellows, and 5 Flat Cdr Blues/4 Flat MR Blues or Ap Per level Blues. 0-21-9 with bonus damage to cc'd targets/extended buffs or 9-21-0 with 5% cdr/butcher/Brute Force/Martial Mastery.(The ad is more profitable in clear speeds than the ap on Mal in terms of masteries and butcher stacks with AS Reds extremely well)
(If you take cdr, go cdr runes with 9-21-0 set up for you want the 10% cdr to get maximum cdr earlier on in the game to ult more often if you want to aim for level 6 ganks mainly and such)
You want to aim for as fast clear as possible early game and to lightly gank early on but aim for the core level 6 gank on bot lane/pick up drag right after.
Use AS quints with ad marks, put on W early for clear speed. But it's really second hand . He clears slowly and his sustain is garbage.
I'm interested to, planned on picking him up if they bring out the shamrock skin this week
You can use armor quints to effectively increase your sustain and increase your damage output, if you're maxing E first. Whenever I play Malphite, it's for his attack speed reduction in fights. So, that's how I play him.
I'd say decide whether you are playing as an AP burster, an AD fighter, or a utility tank. For runes and masteries, what Kawaii Kha suggested is great, but you can also take flat AD quints or flat armor Quints if you want extra early game damage or stronger clear and sustain.
Once you are actually in game, clear one full half of your jungle (and scuttle crab if it is up) and then back for an upgraded Machete. Try not to use more than one of your health pots before your first back, it makes the whole game go more smoothly to have two for after the second half to allow you to either farm more or try a gank (but usually you want to wait until 6 before you start ganking seriously). After 6, gank EVERY time your ult comes up. Even if there isn't a lane that looks bankable, be wary and look out for counter ganks, because if you get a two man ult off, you can turn a gank around fast. If you are ever struggling to clear, remember to wait in between camps for your Passive to reactivate because it saves you about 3 health pots worth ear game every single clear.
You will want to start with E at level 1 most of the time since it is AoE and has an AS slow which lets you clear healthier and faster. After that, get W for the AoE passive and the extra AD and armor for stronger E damage and safer clears. Unless you are considering ganking a lot pre-6 (which isn't that great for Malphite), you can hold off on getting a point in Q until level 4 or 5, but getting it at 4 is usually safer for in case you need to chase/escape an invading jungler. Obviously take your ult whenever possible.
For items, try to play it by ear based on the match, just always remember to buy armor if you can because it scales so well with his kit. On tank junglers, I usually start Ranger's and then switch to Skirmisher's saber because your innately low AS means you get more out of it than someone like Yi, because attacking again only refreshes the true damage burn it deals. If you are playing as AP, you can go for either Magus or Cinderhulk. Magus allows for more frequent and more potent Ultimate ganks, while Cinderhulk's persistent AoE damage synergies well with your kit. Magus is better in a burster build though because you want early game damage, which is where Magus is strong, and you can always get a Sunfire later. after that go for an Abyssal scepter, a Liandry's and then possibly a Seeker's into Zhonya's if you can get away with being squishy.
If playing AD, get a warrior enchant and then beef up so that you can dish out your damage for longer. Getting one other big ticket AD item can help a lot as well, and Black cleaver actually works quite well with your W passive, allowing you to shred armor in an AoE pretty quickly. After that, something like Frozen heart and Locket is quite good and caps out your CDR.
On full tank Malphite, get the Cinderhulk enchantment as soon as possible, it is extraordinary on full tank builds. Don't try to get a sunfire with this item, because they don't stack. After this, build an early Warmog's (between it and your passive you will have full health in the jungle at all times, which means your can gank all the time). After that pick up a FH and Locket (choose whichever based on who on the enemy team is fed) If possible, try to stack armor and health because armor makes your E really hurt.
Get Devourer and go full AD. Gank immediately at level 6, get money.
