Malzahar Top Lane Tips N Tricks

I've gotten grief everytime I'm 1st pick ranked and go top Malzahar. By picking Malzahar first the other team usually counter picks him assuming he's going mid. When I let the teammates know this they usually respond with an "Ah ha" and then counter pick the mid that was counter picking me.

Malzahar vs the top laner.

Malzahar has three pokes...so vs a squishy starting toon like Teemo or even Mundo the pokes create a lot of havoc for them.

  1. Malefic Visions is your money maker in lane. Use it early to poke your enemy and make them waste gold on health pots. Once your enemy backs to purchase more pots before you kill them, push your lane hard. Malefic Visions makes it easy, put Malefic Visions on the creep that your creeps are hitting and then follow it to the next creep, rinse and repeat. At lvl 4 it should take you less than a few seconds to clear the full wave of creeps.

  2. Vs your enemy keep Malefic Visions on them as much as possible (watch out for gap closer enemy like Riven) and use null zone to channelize their movement. Call of the void works awesome to poke an enemy that's afraid of you. Start off with your E then cast w behind them or in front of them depending on which direction they try to go. As soon as you notice which direction they are going cast Call of the Void about two body lengths ahead of them.

  3. Flash and Ignite are a must up top. Weaken your enemy down with Malefic Visions, and poke them as much as possible. Once they make their move to attack you hit them once more with Malefic Visions, cast Call of the Void in front of their charge, and then ignite them, cast null zone on their location and then hit your ult...the result should be one dead enemy (unless they have cleanse or Quick Silver Sash)

  4. Malzahar can burst some damage on an enemy but uses up mana at a crazy rate. IF your jungle is cool with it, try to get blue. Early in the game get items that will regen mana and buy around 4 mana pots to help you keep enough mana around to get a few early kills on the top lane enemy.

Most AP mid's with good waveclear can destroy toplane bruisers. I personally love lissandra top.

Whenever I play malzahar, I level q up in fountain and cast it 3 times, so my first cast inlane will summon a voidling. Having a voidling from the get-go is a major asset in lane.

It's rarely a good idea to spam Malefic Visions on your opponent. After a few casts you will be out of mana and be a fancy caster minion. Against opponents like Riven, who will use their shield to absorb most of the damage, you will be forced to back over and over.

You use Malefic Visions on minions and use the bounce to gain farm. Your waveclear is almost bar none, with your sustain from MV giving you mana from jump to jump. Taking Ignite is a must (because it intensifies DoT damage from MV + it prevents healing), but foregoing Teleport for Flash is a bad risk. Especially since you don't need the additional mobility if you place one ward.
