I want to start using Heim again, and Graves is fun to play...

Tips for both?

There is no mechanical "tips" really but I've started to main Graves so this is my advice:

  1. Graves can be really mana hungry, so only use your smokescreen (W) to escape/set up a gank.
  2. Mana bar OP. Save some mana for when you execute your combo (W>Q>R for me)
  3. Abuse your passive
  4. Graves works insanely well with Blitzcrank/Thresh/Leona/Janna/ WHATEVER SUPPORT IT IS as long as its playstyle is aggressive (AKA lane bully), unlike Soraka (Janna is different, her shield gives AD steroids!)
  5. Mafia Graves > Pool Party Graves

Heimerdinger

  1. Keep your turrets within range of each other, but at the ends of their range. essentially in this formation ∴ a. ideally you want to keep two points of the triangle at the walls on your side of the river b. for more defense, you can place the third closer to your turret c. for more offense, you can place the third turret in the minion wave d. standing in the center of all 3 is your "safe zone" and you'll be very difficult to gank against
  2. Don't expect many ganks from your jungler. Heimerdinger is very difficult to gank for, and just as difficult to gank against
  3. Beware mages with large AoE spells. ie Lux Talon Brand as they can take out 2 or 3 of your turrets at the same time
  4. Learn when to use your ult a. RQ > when being ganked, or in team fights b. RW > to snipe an escaping enemy thats at low health or to clear minions waves real fast c. RE > to initiate a teamfight or help a teammate to catch an escaping enemy thats not low enough to snipe
  5. Placing all 3 turrets in a bush you know an enemy will check is only effective if you can land your E for the stun
  6. Try not to use your W or E early in lane to save mana. You're at your weakest when you can only hold 1/2 turrets, and don't have an ulti
  7. For the most part Flash is pretty useless on Heimerdinger. If a Zhonya's in the middle of your turrets doesn't save you, you're probably not gonna escape with a flash. summoner 12 summoner 21 summoner 7 summoner 13 are your friends

Graves

  1. Mana mana mana. Mana potions item 2004 are your best friend with graves. As much as you might like to build an item 3508 Essence Reaver, or a item 3070 /item 3004, don't. Blue pots get you by, and you need to build the crit/AD to be useful
  2. In line with that, if you can convince your support to grab summoner 13 , your early laning phase will be much stronger and you'll be able to be an even better lane bully.
  3. (this goes for any champ, especially ADCs) Know when to use and when to save your abilities. If you blow all your spells trying to burst your enemy laner from more than half health, chances are they'll just back off and survive long enough to heal back up. You're better off just farming and poking with auto attacks whenever your support lands a CC ability. (ie Janna and Nami ) If you have a support like Thresh Blitzcrank or Leona and they go all in, then you probably will need to use your full combo to trade with the enemy. Basically if you and your partner aren't in direct danger, save your spells
  4. If you aren't trading, use your Q only when you'll get more than 2 CS, and also poke/zone your enemy at the same time
  5. Your smokescreen might look/feel pretty useless when you're first getting in to him, but in a trade with your enemy it'll make a huge difference
  6. Your ult can be pretty lackluster at times, and is pretty hard to land at max range. Even though it seems like a finisher, I mostly use it to initiate a trade/combo. My combo tends to be E(to gap close), AA, R, AA, Q, W, AA until they're dead or your E or Q come off cooldown
  7. Going back to number 1, even at higher levels if you have the space in your inventory it is always worth it to have a couple mana potions
