Attack Speed on Lulu

I've been watching a lot of LCK recently (been finding it a lot more exciting than NA and EU) and Lulu has grown in popularity there. Usually when she's taken top, people run 9 attack speed reds on her and on some occasions, they'll do it when she goes mid (majority of the time she's taken mid, it's Magic pen). Can anyone explain why? I figured it's so she can make more use of her passive in lane, but since she doesn't really get any magic pen items until she's completed at least her Deathcap, mana regen item, and zhonya's, doesn't that leave the team without a lot of magic damage?

The reason you might see lulu players using attack speed runes is because her passive procs on her autoattacks and she has decent attack range (550 atk range) so she can play very aggressive in laning phase against certain short-mid range champions. Lulu is not picked for dmg. Shes known for her utility (shields, bonus health, slows, knock-ups, silence...)

Her spell base damage is very low. Early game attack speed is a very powerful stat for overall dps (damage per second). It can help me CS while harassing when I play ranged top especially versus melee.

I used to play lots of Lulu mid/top, even before it ever became mainstream. I used to run hybrid pen marks and attack speed quints for Lulu mid top. I think AP quints are perhaps best however. I can see attack speed marks and AP quints being good though. When I play support Lulu I've been running AD marks and AP quints but perhaps attack speed marks may be better for damage if a full on fight breaks out (AD would be better for last hitting ease/ 1 auto poke)

In the jungle attack speed runes are popular because it's usually best for overall dps for clear speed. Lulu doesn't have very high magic base damage or AD scalings to make effective use of AD marks or magic pen marks.

When you are good enough to auto harass and last hit attack speed runes are good on even AP Lulu. They're probably not as good later in teamfights compared to AP/spell pen, but it makes you much stronger in lane. The attack speed is much more valuable vs. opponents you outrange because you can slow and harass them for consistent damage. If you had to play Lulu versus a mage with a powerful laning phase though you might be better off with pure mage runes if you cannot find windows you can get a lot of auto harass off (you would have to use your cc and know your opponent's cooldowns)

Keep in mind that help pix has a max attack speed of 2.0 while lulu has 2.5. So its good early game but it falls off late game.

~ Legit once was carrying a game a few patches back with this build. Someone on the enemy team was calling bs and me a noob for using "Mastery Yi" runes. Bc I had rediculous attack speed, on hit effects and a runnan's, I was at the point where I was legit quadra killing them. Not quadra ks, but I guess in a way playing how they said. Like a Master Yi and attack speed, but using ap instead of ad for on hit dmg. I wasn't even using w to polymorph them anymore it was a chasing tool. Self sheilding and ults only to increase survivability and thus out dps the enemy.

Not gonna happen often, but getting fed as an AP On hit attk spd Lulu is very fun, amusing, and personally rewarding.

It really helps get on harass - especially top lane when she is a hyper ranged bully. Can you imagine 3-4 hits which she can easily do when a melee has to cs? It really helps dominate lane.
