Alas, poor Yorick! I need tips for him Horatio; my game-play suffers!

Dear Boards,

I come to you today in regards to Yorick. Alas, poor Yorick suffers such horrible losses when I play him because I lack the knowledge to play him well. When I returned to League I purchased two champions: Yorick who I always wanted to try and Viktor who was an old fave pre-rework. While I didn't enjoy new Viktor I do like Yorick and would like any tips you have.

Any tips at all, such as...

  1. Should he be built as a bruiser or a tank? I feel like he is torn between being one or the other!
  2. Should he be built AD or AP? His stats say he could be built for both.
  3. What is the best way to Jungle with Yorick?
  4. Is Yorick best as a split-pusher or in Teamfights?
  5. What else can you tell me in regards to becoming a better Yorick player?

AD.

His ghost auto attacks scales off his AD. If you build AP then only his W will do any real damage.

Yorick I think is better as a split pusher. Because of the AOE that usually used in teamfights, his ghost die WAY to easily in those fights. But if you have a fed ADC then go into teamfights so you can ult your ADC.

I like item 3508 on Yorick withitem 3042. It allows you to use his ghost more and keep the item on and still have mana. (and you can turn muramana off when fighting minions to restore said mana).

generally ad bruiser ish with a early item 3004 then a tank item or 2 then a item 3508, you get boots somewhere before your essence reaver. then your 6th item is generally what you feel you need whether its a trinity force or a banshee's veil. for top or jungle your maxing e first for sustain and good damage. hes better as a top laner imo he doesnt have the best teamfight unless your adc is fed if your adc is fed ult them in teamfights and you have 2 fed adcs essentially otherwise just splitpush. in lane you want to harass your opponent with your abilities as much as you can and rush your tear ASAP i like to run tele ignite on him for both kill potential and map control. hope this helps!

  1. Should he be built as a bruiser or a tank? I feel like he is torn between being one or the other! Ad bruiser. Muramana, Trinity Force, Mercury Treads, Frozen Heart, Spirit Visage. If the game lasts long enough for you to get a 6th item you can get Warmog's, Randuin's, Maw of Malmortius, OhmWrecker, whatever. Some people build essence reaver, but you don't really need the lifesteal since omen of famine + spirit visage provides enough sustain, you get enough CDR from Spirit Visage, sorcery mastery, and Frozen Heart, and the mana passive is overkill since muramana, Frozen Heart, and Trinity Force provide more than enough mana. If you want extra damage Build a Maw of Malmortius. The lower your hp gets, the more your e will heal you, plus it gives you 60 ad, more MR, and a magic damage shield.
  2. Should he be built AD or AP? His stats say he could be built for both. Although his E does do magic damage it still scales off of ad as well as his q. AD yorick also makes his ult more useful on himself since the revenant will have 60% of the target's AD.
  3. What is the best way to Jungle with Yorick? Always start blue/gromp or you're going to have a bad time. His e is his only sustain in the jungle and it costs a ton of mana. You always want to have all 3 ghouls up when clearing since you get the increased damage and take less damage from his passive. You probably want to get chilling smite since without it he only has 1 form of cc besides red buff. It'll be better than trailblazer because yorick's clears are pretty fast without trailblazer and the chilling smite will make his ganks much more effective. For enchantment you either want to get warrior or juggernaut. He has fast clears and he does auto attack a lot so devourer might work too. I think the best setup is Stalker's with juggernaut enchantment, ninja tabi, muramana, triforce/iceborn gauntlet, Spirit Visage, Frozen Heart.
  4. Is Yorick best as a split-pusher or in Teamfights? Split push all day. When I play Yorick I rarely leave lane. In team fights you do mediocre damage to anyone who isn't a glass cannon carry and since you have no gap closers you will get kited to hell before you can reach any of them. The most you can do in team fights is be a mild annoyance and grant your team a second AD carry. However, once you get triforce you will be able to push down turrets really fast and attract attention to the other side of the map. There aren't many champions that can beat Yorick in a 1v1 so If they send one, you can just kill them and keep pushing. If they send two you can either back off or ult yourself and probably kill them both. If they send more than 2 just back off and tell your team to push another lane.
  5. What else can you tell me in regards to becoming a better Yorick player? I run 9/21/0 masteries, 2 movespeed quints, 1 AD quint, 8 AD reds, 1 crit chance red, 9 armor yellows, and your glyphs can be scaling MR or flat MR depending on who you lane against. The MS quints are really helpful for avoiding ganks throughout the game, without raw speed Yorick is super immobile; I normally run ghost, but if the enemy has a J4 or something use flash. Farm, Farm, Farm, run Teleport so you can farm some more. Rush tear. Don't ever be afraid to bully your lane opponent since Yorick wrecks every top laner in the game besides Cho'Gath, NuNu, and Mordekaiser. Nasus can also give you trouble, but he isn't a hard counter.You can even beat cho'gath if you can juke his skillshots. If you run in to morde or nunu though, run. Remember winning lane with yorick is not about how many times you can kill the enemy top laner. It's about how irrelevant and miserable you can make them. Make every game you play with yorick the most miserable experience of your lane opponent's life. An easy way to do this is to just freeze lane at your turret and bop the shit out of your opponent if they even look at the cs with any sense of desire. If they disrespect you by trying to cs anyway, kill them. They will have so few cs that if they haven't afk'd already it will be as if they did.
