Team Fight Tactics- entire lobby never had their first champ load in

So a friend and I just loaded into a TFT game and we selected our initial champions fine, but when we loaded in to the first match, none of us had our initial champions. We all started commenting in the chat "what's going on?". then we're having to wait out the entire game waiting for everyone to die, meanwhile none of us can do anything.
