Why is this item knock-off a thing?

I had a 1 star Karthus on the board and another karthus on my bench. My Karthus had a:item 3089 item 3165 and the item that silences enemies (item 3070 + item 1057 ).

I picked up my 3rd Karthus from the carousel, which had on a needlessly large rod. Got back to my team and the Karthus combined and knocked off my item 3165. This item was the FIRST item I built, Rabadons being second and the silence item 3rd. So my question is:

Why do items get knocked off, hello? Two, why would it not knock off my last placed item if that were the case?

Knocking all the items upon unit combination would fix this AND the unintended combos, actually.

well like you said, it adds the item and thus karthus has 4 items and one has to go.

when you get a unit while having both bench and field full it get's added to the field, but if you sell a unit you'll notice it also takes a unit of the field. often not the new one.

In this case i'd say they should look into changing the code to remove the last item instead. obviously that's up to riot in the end.

Yeah in that situation last item should get knocked off

It's currently bugged atm. There are a couple of reasons behind knocking items off:

  1. Yuumi item on a sorcerer: When you place the item 1058 and Spatula on a character that is already a sorcerer, that is useless and thus should pop off. Sometimes it doesn't and is bugged.

  2. auto combining units when both have an item: These should pop off. The reason your item 3165 popped off is because the new Karthus that combined had only 1 item item 1058 in his first slot which bounced your item 3165 in the other Karthus first slot off. The intent is that when units combine, you don't want your items to auto combine with each other into a useless item, that feels bad. If you had a item 1057 instead of item 3165 and it auto combined into Ionic Spark (item 1058 + item 1057) You would be pretty upset because now both items are wasted and an item slot on your new upgraded unit too. Feels Bad.

  3. If you wanted them to combine, then you can just combine them once they pop off. You get more options this way.
