What are the mechanics of Thornmail?

Does it reflect based off received damage or unmitigated? Is it's damage reduced by MR? Do misses reflect? That'd be weird, but missed do generate mana for the attacker.

Really wish there was a sandbox mode...

All i know is, there was a Cho'Gath with 3 Thornmails and he just stood there and my entire team of ninja assassins died from autoattacking him. Pretty instantly.
