Generally, children want to play with children, and adults want to play with adults.

Why not allow us to split ourselves up beforehand?

Imagine how much less work the tribunal would be if people would rarely enter games with someone who is playing the game with an entirely different purpose? The younger players who don't want to be told what to do can play with others who don't want to be told what to do. The older players who just want to have an organized team game can play with players who also want to have an organized team game.

This really seems like a win-win to me.

Then don't split it by age, that just seems like the easiest go-to without trying to ask people questions or whatnot.

How about you have one small paragraph for each option, the first one sounding like some sort of hero who leads by action and not words and does not take orders, the second one sounding like someone who wants to combine efforts and try and work yourself into others' strategies, perhaps sacrificing personal glory for the sake of the team.

If you worded it right, you wouldn't have to use something as unreliable as age, just let the descriptions filter us into where we should be. Sure there would still be problem players as there likely always will be, but this would cut back on inter-team conflicts immensely.

What if I told you,

I as an adult, like to play with kids?

actually, adults accept that this sort of generalization doesn´t work at all.

And then the adults that don't want to be told what to do will make the whole division fruitless. :(

Saying only adults can play a game like a mature person is pretty god damn rude really. Not to mention it would never work. The "kids" would still just join whatever games they wanted to because they're "too young to act maturely" as I'm sure you'd put it. There wouldn't be a way to actually separate the "mature" from the "immature" players without some sort of intense screening process. Plus, no in game fighting ever happens because of an age gap. It's always because of either one person being a complete ass, which doesn't happen as much anymore, or because somebody doesn't know how to be constructive with criticism. Hell, I don't think I've seen anyone say how old they were on league in at least a few months. They'd be better off splitting people that get reported often from people that don't get reported very much. Generalizing an entire population based on an arbitrary fact or number never ends well.
