Why wasn't Ascension considered a "rework" to dominion?

I know, it takes away the theme of dominion, but dominion feels the same as other modes, but with capture points. Ascension changed it completely, seeing as any team could be good with equal gold gains and the Xerath ascension and the relics and points - it create such a cool meta. I loved that mode

Dominion is very much a game about control of the map rather than slowly trying to destroy a nexus. When players understand how the game works there is a whole new level of depth added. When I first started playing I seen no point in the jungle except to run for the buff in the center. Now I understand the jungle is useful for rotations and setting up ambushes or ganks.

As well champions are mostly balanced compared to SR which always has its Flavor of the Month or champions clearly stronger than others. Within Dominion its very possible to create new playstyles and get champions to work (Blue Bruiser Lulu, CDR Ashe/Jinx, Poppy, Movespeed Janna are all examples of things you wouldn't normally see in SR that can work in Dominion).
