Hi everyone ^o^/

The sands of Shurima have brought with them our latest Featured Game Mode, "Ascension" and the Play team is here again to field any suggestions and questions you guys might have! We take care of all the Featured Game Modes, so feel free to ask us anything about Ascension (or previous Featured Game Modes). Tell us about your own personal strategies in Ascension. What team comps are the strongest? Who is the most OP Ascended?

We'll be online from now for 2 hours, from 8AM ~ 10AM PST / 4PM ~ 6PM BST. Come tell us your stories! <3

-L4T3NCY -BuffMePlz -Riot Case -RoboLions

EDIT: OK guys, we need to get back to making the next FGM! Thanks to all the EU and NA peeps that stopped by to ask questions. I'm glad we could give you guys some insight into what went into making Ascension!

See you in the sandstorm. >o</

Well, as for a suggestion, mine is more of a plea. Will you please stop making the camera snap to my character every time I teleport into battle? It is so friggin annoying trying to click ahead and get ready to fight, only to have my camera snap back and disorient me.

RiotRoboLions10 votes

For players new to the mode it was very disorienting because of a few factors; a requirement to teleport to different places each time and the fact that the pads look very similar on each side of the map. Internal play tests saw a lot of confusion and this camera snap successfully addressed that. On the other hand, we agree that after you get used to the mode this can be more of a hindrance than a help. When we bring Ascension back in the future we will look at better ways to help players orient themselves and hopefully be able to turn the camera snap stuff off.

What is the meaning of the skull on the top of the map in the shadows and the iron solari icon at the bottom of the map ?

I DON'T KNOW THEY WON'T TELL ME ANYTHING

At one point, the client said that Xerath obliterated Yorick, I was just wondering what happened to need to disable him at that point in time, if you are able to share that. Curiosity killed the cat and all that, but did Yorick have that bad of a time with Xerath? lol.

RiotRiot Case12 votes

Yeah, they had a huge falling out. Zombies-of-zombies were involved, feelings were hurt, but ultimately Xerath won out.

Have any of you played movespeed oriented on the map? I played a movespeed Hecarim for my last game I will play on ascension and had the most fun yet.

another question. why 200 points? games feel REALLLLLLY long even though most of my 13 or 14 games only lasted 20-25 min. and were super stressful while trying to get the perfect icon. also why i will not play another game.

great job though! first few game were awesome but then it got kinda tedious/ stressful cause i primarily wanted the icons.

RiotBuffMePlz9 votes

The 200 point threshold was chosen to hit that appropriate game length. Shorter games felt a bit unsatisfying, often coming to a resolution before your team's strategy really had a chance to get going, and getting full champion progression in that time made the experience feel pretty rushed. Longer games felt, well, long.

And I agree that high mobility champions are super fun to play on Ascension!

Hi, I would just like to share my opinion about the perfect ascension. When people have suggested achievements in LoL, the general (and correct) response has always been: "No, in League there is a single goal, and adding any additional goal will corrupt the game at its core." Now, with the new game mode, Riot has done exactly that. They have created a game with a clear goal for every player: Reach 200 points, but in addition to that, they have decided to reward players for doing something else. To get the icon, a team needs to win a game without the enemy ascending a single time. They have created a situation in which people are playing the mode solely for the icon, and since failure is irreversible (once the enemy ascends it's over), there is no point in continuing playing the game, because the icon was the reason the player started the game to begin with. This creates a lot of negativity, since every game there's a clash of A) people trying to win, and B) people trying to get the icon. Once getting the icon is no longer possible, group B) will be in a state of defeat, while A) is still trying to win the game. Something needs to change because honestly, ruining a great game mode by adding some random icon is a damn shame.

RiotL4T3NCY12 votes

We often hear from players that they would like more ways to express their skill level visually; in particular, wishing there was more value tied intrinsically to things like summoner icons. For example, during the Doom Bots of Doom, many players actually expressed disappointment at the Doom Ziggs icon being too easy to get, devaluing it, and wishing it would have been locked behind beating the 5-bomb difficulty.

The 'Perfect Ascension' icon stems from us wanting to try making a 'challenge mode' icon to reward exceptional play. It had to reflect an actual gameplay achievement. Being a 'challenge', it is of course not compulsory by any means, and if it were too easy, it would have no value right? The icon doesn't require any deviation from regular Ascension play strategy, and happens naturally in the course of playing to win. You just need to win VERY convincingly (IE: play the perfect game).

The point you make about a possible disconnect between players expectations is true though, and we're taking this on board. Misaligned expecations of a game's win condition are probably creating the clash you describe. So we originally were going to make it an 'opt-in experience' and lock it to premade 5-mans, as not everyone might be equally bought in on trying to get it. This felt too limiting though, and we wanted to give everyone a chance to be rewarded for playing that 'perfect game'. We still expect serious players to gather a group of friends and try for it together though.

The temporary nature of Featured Game Modes let's us experiment with new things like this that might not be possible if they were more permanent. We can also learn from these things and let them inform any similar future design features. We'd be remiss not to! ^_^

Mrwhitepantz4 votes

This sounds good in theory, but honestly I feel like it's really coming down to luck whether or not you get the perfect ascension. I have played many games of ascension, probably close to 30 at this point but I'm not sure because I can't load my history for some reason, gotten close to getting the icon, but then the enemy team manages one lucky khazix jump right at the end when it's 190-120 and we lose it. In contrast, several of my friends have gone in on total randoms and gotten their perfect ascensions in the first 5 wins. Even when you have good communication and a decent team comp, the enemy team just has to get one lucky strike and suddenly several members of your team are no longer interested in the game.

RiotL4T3NCY10 votes

If the fight comes down to a scrap at Xerath, that's already an uncontrolled situation and doesn't really sound like a 'perfect game'. :/ Good teams don't leave it to chance at a Xerath fight. They successfuly shut out the other team with area control / teamwork, and take him only when it's safe. We've even been on the receiving end of this and it's an *extremely *effective strategy. Of course, soloqueue teamwork can be hard to wrangle sometimes, and that's something we'd love to figure out ways to encourage in not just Ascension but all queue types.

Tiropat5 votes

yeah what the red said. If you were up by 70 points why were you even fighting Xerath? thats like getting a quadrakill leaving only their jungler up and deciding to baron instead of end the game. I mean you can but.... why?

Tiropat3 votes

Why is Azir able to place a tower where xerath spawns? I was under the impression that he couldn't use his passive on dominion.

RiotRiot Case24 votes

Seeing as Azir is a major part of the Shurima event, we wanted to make sure he had something special for this mode specifically. Also it's awesome.

Salty Kappacino3 votes

What was the inspiration behind ascension, it seemed to go far away from the destroy nexus goal, felt like a 5v5 teambattle seen in first person shooters thanks

RiotL4T3NCY10 votes

We wanted to do something cool for the Shurima event, and each Featured Game Mode is always a great opportunity to explore new types of gameplay within the League of Legends ecosystem. The feeling of a tense, non-stop brawling skirmish was something we enjoyed a lot during initial prototyping and didn't want to pigeon-hole players into having to 'destroy a nexus' or 'push lanes', just because "that's what's done in LoL". We wanted to move all of that out of the way and leave behind just the skirmishing 5v5 battle for players to enjoy. ^_^

Do you think some things on Ascension(equal levels/gold for both teams for example) could be used on other modes? And was there anything in this mode that you considered a major success?

Also, akali is banned so much it isn't even funny.

  1. Is URF mode coming back in any form?

  2. I'm not that good at english so I don't really read lore's. Why is Xerath the boss in Ascension? I though it was very cheap of you to make it that way but there must be a connection with the lore if you put HIM there.

                                                                                                                                                                                                   Thank You in advance.

Urf mode will come back when the time is right. We like to bring game modes back with improvements or slight modifications to keep them fresh, so we are also looking for opportunities to do that.

In the Shurima lore Xerath is the bad guy that betrays his emperor and tries to install himself as leader of Shurima. Not cool, let's get him!

Jace779 votes

laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame

making xerath the grand vizier.

everyone knows the vizier always backstabs the leader.

Rhyto4 votes

Tossing Vizier Malzahar in the trash

way to call them lame XD

Jace778 votes

vizier's aren't lame.

making xerath into the typical backstabbing one is however.

also pretty sure malz would backstab a leader.

vizier malzahar is one of my favorite skins for him i could never toss him in the trash :)

there is a time and a place and i strongly believe xerath was the wrong place

I just want to throw my 2 cents in on URF. First I freaking LOVE URF!! Second, i would love to see doom bots combined with URF. Players get URF buff vs Doom Bots

Daen2 votes

Did you have any unexpected or hilarious moments/glitches during setting up and/or testing Ascension?

RiotBuffMePlz15 votes

Nothing super crazy this time around, though we do have a screenshot up on a wall at work where blue team's base is entirely covered with Relics of Shurima.

There was also a bug where two champions from opposite teams capturing the same relic would cause the relic to auto-capture itself.

Daen21 votes

Relic: "Screw this, I'm done." captures self

Kumatetsu3 votes

The relic auto capture is still hapenning :D

RiotBuffMePlz12 votes

Er...I thought we fixed that. =( If not, then change "was" to "is" in my previous statement, and thanks for the report!

Kumatetsu9 votes

Also, i don't know if it is a bug or not but if two Azirs click on the same destroyed turret, the one who clicked last gets the turret and if the last Azir who clicked dies/ gets out of range/his turret gets destroyed, the other Azir's turret apears in its place.

What do you think was the hardest to implement into Ascension? Was there anything that was really cool that you wanted in the game mode, but just wasn't able to for whatever reason?

RiotRiot Case6 votes

I had the pleasure of dealing with all the Zombie-related issues (like killing Xerath as Zyra's Vengeful Plant), there were a lot of thorny edge cases and timing issues that proved challenging. As for "really cool stuff", we did play around with an idea for hidden content... i'm surprised it doesn't seem to have been found yet ;P

Daen14 votes

We're approaching the end of Ascension, a hint might be in order... :P

houruser1 votes

Did you guys have a clear idea of what characters would work best in this mode? As in bruisers tend to do better in this mode, rather than supports.

RiotL4T3NCY8 votes

We playtest every new game mode extensively so, we tend to get a good idea of what *we *think is fairly strong. Of course, players are much MUCH better than us, so once a mode goes live we're always surprised by certain sleeper picks we never would have expected to be strong. :P

Ascension is particularly interesting when looking at ban popularity VS actual win rates. The perception of the current 'assassin meta' being the strongest and "absolutely a MUST PICK" is interesting. :) There is a cluster of assassins that are seeing an ungodly amount of bans, and yet almost ALL of them have a sub 50% win ratio. This probably signals strong champion enjoyment more than actual functional superiority in Ascension. ^_-

Sneak Dog2 votes

Might it be that the champions have a low winrate due to their high banrate? "Oh it's not banned this game, lets pick it because it's op"? Inverse of low pick ratio champions having unexpectedly high winratios because only players that know that champion play it.

RiotL4T3NCY8 votes

We thought the same thing initially, but proved ourselves wrong when we looked at higher MMR Ascension ban & win rates. The higher MMR goes, assassins trend to being banned MUCH less, and other true problem champs see increasingly higher ban rates.

Thryale3 votes

it's a battle to the death, why wouldn't ppl enjoy playing assassins? I mean, with so many half hp targets, it's just an assassin's playground.

That being said, I think the reason they have a low win rate is because that is all they are good at. I suspect it is because they lack the objective control that ranged or cc heavy champs bring.

Final GirI1 votes

How long does it normally take you all to make a mode like Ascension? Obviously you had to take away the nexus on the dominion map (Where does that go anyways?) and all the normal spots that you can claim for points. What is the process you have to go through to take all these things away and add new things, like the relics and all the sand? Not to mention having all the Shurima champs say special things. On another note, why Shurima? Can we expect Freijlord events? Or Zaun events? Or does Shurima just have a special place in the hearts of Riot employees. It is a pretty cool place after all. Thanks for reading my rant!

RiotBuffMePlz13 votes

Ascension took about two months to make. There's always a bit of infrastructure work to make sure the modes work the way we want them to - in this case, we used a similar framework that allows both Battle Training and regular classic gameplay to exist simultaneously on SR, and allows us to selectively load the scripts and assets we need to make the mode work.

We put the removed nexuses in the shed out back where we keep all the other nexuses we're not using at the moment.

Pıchu1 votes
  1. Are there any other ideas of new games modes already?

  2. Could we get some hints what it possibly will be? :)

  3. Why did you decide to knockback all enemies which stand nearby the new Ascendant?

  4. Why exactly did you decide item 3460 to be the only way to get onto the battlefields? To avoid extremely fed champions to camp your base?

  5. Are you allowed to tell us when the Summoner's Rift VU is probably coming on the live servers?

Thank you in advance! :3

RiotBuffMePlz6 votes
  1. Yes!

  2. Nope! =) In all seriousness, a lot of these ideas are unproven and unbaked - even Ascension went through several iterations before we landed on what we have now. Teasing a mode that we end up not delivering because it wasn't fun isn't great (and I know we've been guilty of this in the past, sorry). But rest assured that we have several ideas in the backlog!

  3. The goal of the Ascension buff was to make someone burn bright and fast. Camping the Ascended felt really bad for a team that comes out of a clutch Ascended fight down a champion or two, and making the Ascended more tanky felt directionally off for what we wanted the Ascended to be - a powerful combat participant with a strong but temporal advantage. The knockback gives the Ascended player more strategic options upon appearing, but at the same time doesn't give a free pass to a player that steals it from a team 1v5 - it's quite doable to hang out back and murder the Ascended with great prejudice once he appears when he's in the midst of 5 players.

  4. Teleporting in felt like a cool way to get players into the action - we wanted to center the experience around skirmishing and objectives. Retreating and escaping is unbecoming of the Ascended and his followers! Teleporting in allowed us not only to close off this avenue of unhealthy combat-adverse gameplay, but also to get players into the action faster, as well as providing new strategic decisions for engaging in combat. Do I teleport close to the team fight that's happening to try to take down the enemy Ascended, or go to a point further away and try to take a relic while everybody's busy?

  5. I don't actually know, sorry. =(
