[New Game Mode] Introducing Practice Mode

Deep Terror Nami·11/12/2014, 7:54:30 PM·110 votes·16,574 views

Practice not as in just fighting bots or in normals where it's not as competitive, but a mode where you can test mechanics of the game efficiently as often as you want, such as;

Toggle gold costs - You can enable to buy any item you want, from level 1.

Manually adjust your level - You can level up normally, and/or you can simply adjust a slider.

God Mode - You can enable this so you don't have to worry about dying as you test something out.

Control AI - Add or remove any enemy or ally AI at any point, make them passive/aggressive, change their items/levels/abilities, increase/decrease their difficulty setting, make them go to a certain lane or position on the map.

Change champion - Like the AI, you can swap your champion at will from the menu, and also your Mastery/Rune/Spells.

Reset CD / Adjust total CDR - Reset all your skill CD's so you can use it again for testing, or simply set the CDR high.

Reset all towers/minions/neutral objective - Start the game from scratch so you don't lose/win while you're still trying to play.

Players are an enormous source for discovering bugs in the game, but when they want to make a decent Bug Report, they either have to go off what they remembered seeing, watch a replay (which they rarely have), or most importantly/effectively they try to reproduce the results so they know for sure what happens and under what circumstances.

For me, this mode would be about either testing bugs to report, or gauging the effectiveness of certain builds without spending 40 minutes in a solo Custom farming gold then losing/winning because of minions.

Commenter Suggestions;

  • No Respawn Timer
  • Homeguard buff without boots
  • Realtime Stat Tracking (DPS, GPM, etc.)
  • Enhanced AI directions (i.e. tell them to push an objective)
  • Remove Turrets from the map, spawn minion waves from any/all points
  • Alternatively, an open Arena for battling player prompted waves of minions/Champs
  • Dummy targets for you to wail on which you can adjust its Runes/Masteries/Items/Level

Keep the ideas coming, and upvote the thread if you'd like it to get more attention. I'll simply repost this later to get fresh eyes on it.

Starting gold and Starting levels selection is something that should exist in "Custom".

To be honest, Riot should rename "Custom" to "Pick your teammates and your enemies", because there's no customization about it.

I've always wanted a practice mode as you described to work on champions like Riven for quick animation cancel training. (yassss)

MrBuffington11/13/2014, 4:31:48 AM6 votes

I'd appreciate real time stat tracking, things like DPS or GPM, so you can find optimal builds instead of just guessing it from playing a bunch of games.

I always wondered why they don't have something like this now. If they want to make it an "esport" that means ppl need to practice in ways other than just the game, or a 1v1 bot game. In sports people run drills that are nothing like the real game in order to practice specific parts of their game. I feel like this shouldn't be hard to do considering all the game modes they have made.

i would love to see this implemented better in custom game modes

im stuck in the Support role, and transitioning to a new role is very tough. all of my friends that i play with are flexible in almost every lane, and im the one always stuck support. while i love it, and think im a really great support, the best in my group, i want to get into other lanes.

when i play with a specific group, i get thrown mid sometimes. now recently, ive been doing a great job according to them, for someone who cant play those kinds of roles well, but still, i would love to get more practice on my own time. I unerstand thats what bot games are for, but you cant do that when people dont respect the meta at all. I try for ADC, and we get a duo ADC bot, or if i try top, theres a duo top, and it sucks :/

People were asking for something roughly like this since day 1.

From my Vague memory, Riot said something along the lines of them not wanting to do it because they didn't want practice mode being hacked and exploits being used for whatever.

Nearly everything the OP listed, Dota 2 already had it since day 1.

How sad is that?

Jakethenight11/13/2014, 6:10:44 PM2 votes

Most games have these; hell even Battlefield 4 has one. Why is Riot so far behind?

LuckyReden11/13/2014, 7:32:51 PM2 votes

This has been an idea for a long time but has never gotten any attention from Riot. It is obviously a community desired thing and should be put into the game.

Lol, had this http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/summoners-rift/l4mdfEzN-practice-map post a week ago, I'm glad urs got some attention. I really want this just to practice flash combos.

Vamp1ck11/14/2014, 1:26:00 AM2 votes

Good idea this would be nice for a relaxing game mode where you just dont really feel like going competitive or having to put the effort into getting fed off of bots.

Salt and Veigar11/14/2014, 1:50:19 AM2 votes

So a Sandbox mode? Sounds awesome +1

Nak3dTurkey11/14/2014, 12:13:50 PM2 votes

It would be great to practice some flash plays with LeeSin

ChaosThief11/14/2014, 2:50:12 PM2 votes

Multiple settings to allow things such as using the same active over and over and modifying cooldowns/mana use?

... That might make urf though...

Maybe just the item thing. How funny would it be to die to 6 DFGs or get zhonya'd 6 times over?

bzhen091511/14/2014, 5:14:42 PM2 votes

These would be SUPER awesome in custom games! I wouldn't call this another game mode I think all of these ideas should be implemented in custom games.

I'm pretty sure that giving players the direct control over core game elements and developing and UI for that will take a lot of work. But it is definitely possible!

This idea is perfect for new players to try out items and abilities. Maybe an option to put bots in your practice session would work out well.

Forest Gem11/14/2014, 1:06:34 AM1 votes

I need this. It will totally help me with practicing my builds and seeing what works and what doesn't. I don't use custom and other games rarely go long enough for me to get the full build. As someone who mains as support but wishes to get practice in other roles as well this would be nice.

OJ19112/15/2014, 11:44:19 PM1 votes

Add in target dummies with adjustable items, runes, masteries, level (while in game!) and I'm sold on this.

"No no no, this would make the game too easy for noobs lolz"

-some really cynical people

privatecaller11/13/2014, 7:10:16 PM1 votes

i really think this idea would be good to put in or under "custom" as I do feel the same myself at times. RITO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!

AXDSorcerer3/2/2015, 7:34:54 PM1 votes

That would be more like a debug mode instead a practice mode... for that just go to Custom Games... there you have the so called practice mode, but for whatever you're asking is more like an open section in the game, more depending on console commands, parameters and such, in contrast with other games that has this type of features... or either these options could be selected while setting up the configs for the game. All rounds up to Custom Games... Yup... Indeed... Sorry to lower your expectations but this won't be a new mode.

Ayano Aishi8/5/2015, 11:35:45 PM1 votes

Actually we can create custom games, where we customize the enemies and our team but only for summoner's rift?

item 3001 "I am angry!!!"

ømg8/2/2015, 9:51:22 AM1 votes

Bumping, this would be very useful for improving champion mechanics. DotA 1 on WC3 had this for single player, can we get it as well?

Rito pls

UTRN11/14/2014, 6:38:36 PM1 votes

Please Riot you can do this in other games such as fighters its so useful. Maybe be able to set enemy's up to do certain moves so we can figure out counters.

FarRockBF11/13/2014, 4:22:17 PM1 votes

My idea I posted a week ago would accomplish the same thing with much less programming and would require no game load time or internet connection. Allow for a local map on your drive where you can click a button and have enemy minions or champs come at you.

You would have no gold restrictions and be able to set your level.

EndohYumi11/14/2014, 8:24:16 PM1 votes

seems like a really useful tool

Tamur11/15/2014, 1:09:39 AM1 votes

At first I thought this was not a good idea after reading the title but now I think they should combined this with the "Custom" Match they have now.

The problem I think is switching of champions mid match cause you got bored of the current champion. Due to the way matches load currently.

Luuma11/15/2014, 2:19:25 PM1 votes

Well thought OP. GG.

Hanoi9711/30/2014, 2:23:22 AM1 votes

I like the Control Al idea. For instance, when I play a 5 vs. 5 match with me as the only human player and all other players as intermediate bots, my allied Garen bot initially wanted to go mid and then decided to go duo bot with Galio. The problem with that is that I wanted to try the new jungle out, but our ally Caitlyn bot was left to fend for herself against Lucian and Nidalee. This meant that I had to constantly help Caitlyn so she wouldn't cost us the match, which means that I had no time to jungle. I don't really blame poor Caitlyn, I blame our only two tanks for going duo bot and leaving Cait by herself. Another weird thing was that the enemy Master Yi bot went mid against our team's Lux. Lux was the only bot doing the right thing . . . that is, until she started KSing me with her ult whenever I try to gank her lane in which she doesn't participate until she feels like ulting my kills. Back to my point, I think this option would really help with this lane choosing problem in Custom battles. Also, I support all these ideas for this new game mode plan. Keep up the good suggestions, Valkyrie.

Rito, plz.

In all seriousness, this is a really nice quality of life change for us. It's quite tedious to exit a game after x amount of minutes just to restart a match.

Possta11/13/2014, 7:27:39 PM1 votes

This. I like this.

Kinjishi12/15/2014, 2:31:32 AM1 votes

"Toggle gold costs - You can enable to buy any item you want, from level 1." What would be the point of buying any item from level 1, when you can't even do that normally.

tau4311/13/2014, 9:01:09 PM1 votes

Something like this for champs like Irelia would be amazing.

RNJefe11/13/2014, 9:05:21 PM1 votes

Yes pls! Bump

NEED FOR CH4OS11/13/2014, 9:10:02 PM1 votes

Not only do I want a mode like this for practice, but it would be really fun if we could make custom games with these options.

SlackerboyTC11/13/2014, 9:55:02 PM1 votes

so is this like a testing stats game mode?

Crownsy11/13/2014, 10:04:03 PM1 votes

I think this would be very useful, as someone who plays champs with alot of skill shot ults. It is annoying to only get to practice your timing on those 4-5 times a match.
