One For All:SR popular picks & bans discussion

Heya guys, as usual when we wrap up Featured Game Modes we like to talk a little about each mode's landscape. o^_^o

Some popular bans: It didn't feel like there was much of a role/style theme to bans, just "whatever people thought was strong" or "champs they didn't want to play against"? Darius, Yasuo, Katarina, Lux & Heimer were pretty popular to ban. At high MMR none of them were really that strong, being itemised against or "out-kitted" depending on the enemy champ. They do have a fairly low barrier to entry to access power (except Yasuo), so that could be one reason? What champs did you guys usually ban (and why)?

Q: Did you ban Wukong? A: "Every mistake is a lesson." --- MonkeyKing

Some popular picks: Not too surprised here, a lot of the popular champs could make #bigplays and are kinda flashy. Yasuo, Lee Sin, Lux, Blitz & Ezreal all saw a fair bit of play time. I'm impressed that Yasuo got through so much, given how heavily he was banned. o.O Despite being overwhelmingly popular, champs like Nidalee, Fiddlesticks and Soraka didn't really fair too well. Were there any other champs you guys felt were super popular, but actually just terrible?

**Q: **Can a random sample of players in your MMR pickup and successfully play Azir in OFA? A: No. :/

5 Heimers fast-pushing mid, even buying zz-Rot Portal... Why wasn't he banned like Teemo or Karthus?

I think OfA is better with mirror mode. Because Darius vs Sona isn't really fun. Or Yasuo vs Rammus.

Nidalee seemed absolutely awful. I swear that's the case with every featured game mode - everyone starts out like "OMG LET'S PLAY NIDALEE IT'LL BE HILARE" and it just does not work. Urf mode memories.

Leave Lux open for one match when you pick Azir into it...... Land one light binding, a hoard of 5 lasers evaporates you.

For me, Tahm was the ultimate O4A champ, followed closely by Veigar. They weren't unstoppable, of course, but you get enough of them in one place and it was basically an issue of enemy champs never getting to move again :P

It was likely a bit annoying for opponents, which is the one major downside of the game mode, but I enjoyed the hell out of it!

I stuck to banning the most common bans in my MMR range (Darius, Skarner, Morde, Garen), mostly to keep the peace and stop teammates from tilting.

I played a couple of across the board bad matchups (Melee vs. Caster, or their mage's zones slightly outranging ours), and they were okay as long as the team stayed together mentally. Even if we still lost the match, we could put up a fight and do our collective thing at the right time, which felt great!

But it was immensely frustrating when the someone perceived their bad lane as a fault of pick and bans and start playing for themselves rather than the team. So I'd rather waste a couple of bans on champions that I thought were manageable- or even fun to play against- and avoid a frustrating situation.

I think Morde specifically was rough- he has a giant reputation due to Worlds, and he can duolane in top and bot with less of a resource penalty. It sticky enough trying to convince someone to 1v2 for the overall team benefit, but laning against dual Mordekaisers sounded like an incredibly frustrating experience.

TerraRising10/27/2015, 12:37:12 AM1 votes

Morde was stupid powerful in this mode.

Had an all-Heimer game that was dull.

Too many leavers, too.

Heimer was banned a lot, and it had nothing to do with barrier of entry as much as...Heimer turrets.

there was no way to siege or dealing with 6 turrets in lane, and if they grouped, you lost, and that was that. I mean, you can't even dive onto them with 15 turrets up because there is no way at all to not just die even if you kill one of them.

Yasuo was banned I think because people got tired of seeing it picked. I saw a LOT of times people would just ban Yasuo so someone wouldn't nominate it because they got tired of playing it, and not just because it was so strong. It was super easy to beat with tank teams, or Darius aa I actually found one of the stronger picks that somehow showed up infrequently was Sona. There was just no dying almost with the heals, and the ults shut up everything, plus the poke damage. It beat tanks, assassins, mages, you name it.

All in all a lot of the champs that were strong were strong because of lane presence. If they could get ahead in farm and be a bully, they just easymode snowballed, like a Heimer. He could keep you from farming plus farm, especially 2v2, or if your team for some reason jungled, then your top was SoL 100%. Lux was similar because she could easily harass you away from farming with 2 of her. It was almost like 70% chance of winning that mode if you won laning phase, because usually you could just keep the enemy from farming, and I saw more often than not, if one team jungled, and the other didn't, the team without the jungler almost always won because of the lane advantage.

I banned brand all the time, and zilean/cho also a lot. Don't like to get permastunned :) Ezreal was really fun to play imo And I think what was OP really depended on what kind of champs the opponent had, but darius did good for me in general.

Fallsmyer10/27/2015, 1:34:21 AM1 votes

Tahm Kench was the only champion I felt needed to be perma-banned or auto-picked. Tahm passive being shared against all Tahms was pretty OP, 3 stacks = death; stun, stun, stun, devour! Also Tahm is really easy to build and itemize against whoever you are playing against. AP Champion? Build Banner of Command and instantly win. Darius was another champion I pretty much perma-banned or auto-picked, because he is just so strong. Super high damage from level 1 and you can build him tanky so most matchups are a breeze. Sure he can be kited by a few champions, but those champions were VERY rarely picked. Heimer was one of the most annoying champions because it endlessly pushes and clearing 6 turrets are impossible to take out. In my last A4O game we were swain against heimer and that was a really good matchup against Heimer, but it wasn't like we picked swain to counter heimer since it is blindpick. The fact that it was blindpick is why heimer was so strong. Veigar never scared me, probably because in my first game against him I got lucky and was Olaf. Super easy match up and was a stomp from level 1.

The most fun champion was WuKong. Several matchups don't seem like they would be good but it worked. First game was WuKong agaisnt Xerath, but started with Nimbus Strike first and was able to bully the lane super hard.

Zyvux10/27/2015, 8:30:35 AM1 votes

So who exactly did have the highest winrate?

Karppa10/27/2015, 9:34:08 AM1 votes

I found Anivia pretty strong pick and played her couple of times. She could proc E double damage from other birds' ulti or Q which was pretty ridiculous (especially at lvl2!). I also loved to block my premade friends to death <3

Kindred was probably my most seen pick on OFA, which was not really that fun. Everyone wanted to give a try to new champion (without investing IP). I was done with him/her/(it) in after couple of games (and ended up banning her/him/(it) whenever I could). She/he/(it) had no epic wombo combos with each other which was pretty much reason to my boredom. Bard was also a popular pick (and ban) in my games, probably because someone wanted to try what it feels like to have pretty much infinite Magical journeys.

Mostly bans were pretty diverse in my matches, due to my friends banning "troll picks" which I wanted to play. RIP Soraka, Yorick and couple of others </3

I was really surprised that I saw Shaco only once and banned only twice or so (out of 50 games). I thought that he would be more popular since he can go AD or AP and he has dat sneaky Q. _ Btw, Draven vs. Ziggs one of the funniest match-ups I played_

Cheers, Karppa

Yasuo and Kat were banned because people didn't want to play them not because they didn't want to fight them. You need to make One For All 100% random People would be happier being forced to play champs terrible for the mode through bad luck rather than through premade dicks purposely choosing terrible champions.

Kamakazie10/27/2015, 12:19:13 PM1 votes

Just to add my 2 cents worth, 10 yoricks was pretty fun with the most confusing team fights I've even been in.

Hunna8l810/27/2015, 12:32:59 PM1 votes

Kalista was so fun and so strong, partially because A: you could do a neato thing where you get ulti'd in for the knock-up and then another teammate could pull you back to safety.

B: the spears all stack together in a way, like if Kalista A rends, then all the spears in any target from ANY Kalista get pulled out, so if you all have runaans it's pretty easy to get e resets, and baron isn't even close to contestable.

C: W proc with eachother <3

Thales10/26/2015, 11:30:12 PM1 votes

So Nid, Fid, and Soraka (and probably Azir) didn't do too great. What were some very successful champions? Any that are considered pretty weak in the regular game?

THE RlVER KlNG10/27/2015, 12:37:52 PM1 votes

I've played: Singed vs Lux (victory) Hilarious because the kill score was like 30-15 but we just all built Banshees and Locket and one guy went full AP so we would just roam all over the map and be dicks and troll them and stuff- one time all five hit me with bindings and ulted me and I got away. We just kept pushing and disrespecting them until we won at like 50 minutes.

Kat vs Blitz (loss). I was against playing Kat from the start but one guy convinced the others it would be a good idea. So we loaded up game- and we saw our biggest counter. Me and one guy got pretty strong (I was like 22-7 I think) but the others fed and it was GG.

Rammus vs Yasuo (victory) So hilarious. We were all so tanky with Thornmail and DBC that they were doing more damage to themselves than we were to them. It did help that this was premade and my friends are pretty good (they trolled me and made me solo bot after I got Relic Shield lol, but I stole all his reds and Krugs). Ok. They also always missed their tornados, which makes me sad because I play a lot of Yasuo.

Tahm vs Bard (victory) I main Tahm and I got my teamates to do it with me. The endless Bard stuns were annoying but after we got tanky and started coordinating we caught out the pack leader a lot and one of us got Mikaels so he cleansed important guys of stuns. I was fairly fed (15-5ish) and it was very fun, especially agains a bunch of Bards building Wits End and Nashors and Runaans.

Skarner vs Bard (victory) We were actually doing bad at first. They didn't have jungle, and I had take smite, so I just roamed all over the map and I was quadruple buff by 10 minutes. Me and my midlaner were caught out at the Baron pit. I made a run for it and he died, so the Bards continued to chase me. Get this: 2 magical journey over to me once I get to my inner top turret (I was about half health) I stun both and turret finishes them off. Double Kill. The other comes soon after, he falls in a likewise manner. The fourth Bard tried to be smart and tunnel around me, but I stunned him too. Quadra Kill! At that point no one wanted to fight me, I soloed Drag (I got my Sheen and Warrior on that back) and my top lane Skarner also got fed and we both just snowballed all over them even though out mid Skarner had fed, no offense to him, because he was mid Skarner after all.

Jinx vs Morde (victory) No mobility or CC against a Jinx team? Good luck with that. Our midlaner got super fed, our bot went about even, and I was support top but I roamed and bought troll items like Zekes and Zhonyas and Zephyr. I helped our top get fed and we pushed them to inhibitors by 15. It was a bloodbath after that, I don't think they even got a dragon ghost once.

Bans were always Darius and Heimer, but I also saw a lot of Vel, Kat, Yasuo, Eve, and J4. Bard was popular it was wierd. He was strong early but his damage just doesn't compete lategame, especially with 5 sets of chimes to keep track of when most Bards can't even manage one!

Linna Excel10/26/2015, 11:50:22 PM1 votes

I think Soraka isn't popular in that a lot of people love her, she's a cheap support to own and simple to use for people who never play support. She's the only support Stonewall has on one of his accounts because he doesn't support.

Wind Whistler10/27/2015, 12:09:25 AM1 votes

When I started playing Sion (also Gnar but to a lesser extent), a lot of people flamed me, even though I was pretty sure it would work out great, and sure enough it did. Towards the end of the game mode, I saw more people playing champions that I had been playing, and they all had pretty high winrates. I guess I was mostly right about who was strong and who was weak in OFA, and other people learned similarly as time went on.

hinapia10/27/2015, 12:13:51 AM1 votes

Taric was pretty disastrous :/ you get stunned once and everyone stuns you immediately. Really unfortunate when you're playing Kindred!

On the other hand - OFA Talon wrecked faces. The pure damage burst he has was way too strong - but I'm a Talon main, so. I wasn't surprising it to go so well, though.
