Poro King favourite champs discussion

Heya guys ^_^/

So the Poro King is gone for now, but his legend will live on forever.. inside of you. We hope you enjoyed playing the mode as much as we did! For the last few featured game modes, we've had a chat afterwards about "which champs were popular", "who felt the most effective", etc. In the same spirit, I'll kick things off again here. :D

Everyone seemed to feel the increased presence of melee or 'hard engage' champs in Poro King (as indicated by pick rates). It was refreshing to see many traditionally side-lined champions on Howling Abyss actually get a heap of playtime and be intentionally picked up (using the Blind Draft pick type). Rammus & Galio in particular were pretty terrifying. Those diving taunts... o.O

At the top of bans, continuing her baffling popularity in the face of mediocrity, was Katarina. :P More than 4 out of 5 games had Katarina banned, despite her continued average performance. The higher we go in MMR brackets though started to see Alistar, Galio & Blitzcrank occupying some of the top ban spots (still behind Katarina of course :P).

I also want to call out the Poro Toss summoner spell, which gave an across-the-board bump in viability to some historically unpopular picks. Even with picking your champs, engage from the Poro Toss summoner spell was able to wing clip the power of some notoriously strong Howling Abyss champs.

So what are your guys' stories from Poro King? Feel free to share below!

I actually got to play Kat Katarina once in poro mode. Got a penta and we won the game. My single game sample size proves all of your statistics wrong and she was clearly op.

Actually, for me, the single scariest, most op feeling champ in the mode was AnnieAnnie . I only saw her a few times, (played her once or twice too), but she never lost. She won every game I saw her in. Her ability to porosummoner 31 tibbers instaburst one person while ccing the rest was godly. And I think that was the big factor.

Any champion who A. Has "difficulty engaging" as their weakness or B. "difficulty disengaging" were the ones that became scary. When the poro king was out, champs like master YiMasterYi , KatarinaKatarina , YasuoYasuo , IreliaIrelia ...all those champions that can die if they dive too deep became nightmares to deal with. Others, like Ali Alistar and GalioGalio , who have difficult engages (Headbutt > Pulverize is ok, Pulverize > headbutt to team is far scarier...guess which one poros facilitated?) also became far more consistently scary.

All in all, I really enjoyed the mode, but I also play primarily Arams anyway, so it wasn't much of a shift.

Edited because I totally left a sentence incomplete and a second time because, oh yeah, champion icons!

{quoted} I also want to call out the Poro Toss summoner spell, which gave an across-the-board bump in viability to some historically unpopular picks. Yet, despite realizing that, you will most likely ignore requests to port it to regular HA so poke and healers (the recent heal nerf did basically nothing btw) can remain in the 65%+ win rate area, ranged AD can laugh while lifestealing back their entire health bars in seconds while melee continue to flounder about uselessly. Am I right?

Anyway, since you asked... my favorite champ in Poro King was Fiddle, because Porostorm is hilarious and so are totally random Dark Wind kills. When he was banned (like 50% of the time) I liked picking Vlad who was surprisingly useful with the ability to dive, E, Q, then pool away, nevermind his ult. Rammus was also fun when a tank was needed.

i had a decent amount of success with Sion. the gapcloser made the undead meatshield quite scary

I had a lot of success with Malzahar Malzahar, and I'm not sure why. I guess just his pushing power, his Q can be a pretty potent silence on such a small map, and his W was pretty good for taking out an enemy Poro King.

I played Gnar some on the mode, but I don't remember anything particular about him being strong in the mode or not.

Only played one game against him, if I remember correctly, but Darius was a nightmare; turns out giving a champ with the strength of "Will decimate (hue) if you get close" the ability to jump to your face every 15-20 seconds makes him pretty strong.

I'm trying to remember who else I played, but nothing's coming to mind right now. I took quite a long break on Christmas Eve, so I probably didn't play it as recently as others.

Either way, I still had a lot of fun when the mode came out; like you said, having Poro Toss gave a lot of melee champs who normally wouldn't be great on Howling Abyss the ability to get into range easily.

Lissandra was made for this mode.

Toss poro > Go in > W and R

OR

Toss poro > Cast E before going in > Q or W then very quickly press E again like you were never there.

O_O

Thanks for posting this! Always find these threads interesting. I think Azir was a hidden OP, but my favorite was Garen :D Nothing Like tagging a low health target with a poro and dashing in for the ult!

Foidewall1/17/2015, 3:45:15 AM1 votes

I mainly played SorakaSoraka , and had great success with it, her silence placed on the food of someone hit by a poro, has given my team countless kills, from poor enemy´s that thought they had a free engage. Plus her heal on the poro-king in the endgame, made him difficult to kill for the enemy.

Darius with a 10 second cooldown gapcloser was such a blast to play, get an early triforce, land a poro and combo someone to death since NO ONE CAN FLASH AWAY FROM YOU :D

Poro King was the most powerful Darius has ever been in any game mode

Jungle Lux God1/17/2015, 3:55:26 AM1 votes

The most fun I had on the map was when I played Fiddlesticks. If you saw Dunkey's video on the game mode, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

With Fiddlesticks, you can literally ult in a random location and Poro Dash to someone you hit with Poro Toss for easy and safe activations of his ultimate. Alternatively, if the enemy team is near the Poro King, you can ult, go To The King, and still potentially get the ult off.

My favorite play, which I call the Fountain Wind Okie Doke, is when you Poro Toss a low health enemy in the enemy fountain, Poro Dash in, and land a Dark Wind before dying, hopefully getting executed in the process instead of giving away a kill.

I also enjoyed Skarner, although I could never get the Impale To The King combo to work successfully without the target dashing out of it.

Stars Shaper1/17/2015, 8:09:43 AM1 votes

Galio This guys was total awesomeness in that mode. Which made me think...

Why don't you rework his E into a dash-like flight? Maybe that stops on first target (enemy champion) hit to not have it OP. Galio really lacks the feel of "in flight" and a small dash would make a huge difference in his big plays potential since in League of Mobility you won't have a slow tank walk into an enemy team and taunt them all. Well know that his only chance is the use of flash.

FatesDefiler1/17/2015, 8:15:48 PM1 votes

Mordekaiser. In my opinion he's probably the single character that benefited the most from the addition of a dash to his kit. I really wish for an item that gives the active ability to dash to a target hit by a skill shot. It would surely increase the game's variety in character selection (which champs the community feels are currently viable), and also be really fun, strategic item to use. I thought snowdown was awesome, felt like you never knew for sure which team would win. I hadn't played so much league in ages, hope it returns at some point in the future.

the14baller1/17/2015, 8:15:58 PM1 votes

My favorite champ was Heimerdinger.

"The enemy team has summoned the poro king!" I press R, hover my mouse over the enemy poro king, then press E. "Your team has dispelled the poro king!"

Kalarepa1/18/2015, 7:32:50 PM1 votes

Brand was the most thematic for me. I would throw myself into middle enemies like giant fireball and literally explode. I'd die in process, but also do ridiculous damage.

HyperZEROXL1/19/2015, 2:21:47 PM1 votes

I played numerous of my champs either ones I use a lot or not a lot, but the ones I loved best were these, Xerath: Range was OP Chogath: CHO'ZILLA IS HERE! Pantheon: This...is...PANTHEON! Rumble: Ultimate is OP! Shaco: ROFL XD ADC goes into bush, and it was massacred in 5 secs. Veigar: What's black and blue and about to show you the definition of pain?! Answer: Me Talon: Live and die by the blade...Really, just die =3

Malzahar

Got my very first Pentakill in this game mode using this champ.

Der Lindwurm1/19/2015, 2:51:03 PM1 votes

I only got to play Slay Belle Kat a few times because everyone kept banning her. She did take advantage of being able to shunpo to a target and instantly retreat back to the king, but it's not like the king was there the whole time. It's true she can clean up a whole team very easily if they're all worn down from fighting, a common scenario in that map, but even then that only happens if no one on the whole team has the necessary combination of wits and abilities to thwart her. With everyone generally relatively close together there's no excuse other than low level play for no one on a whole team of 5 not being able to do something to stop a champion with no untargetability and no CC.

But I had some great runs with Morgana and Soraka. I tossed lots of poros, even picked up quite a few kills with poros (I thought there should have been a special "POROKILL!" announcement whenever that happened) but I only rarely rode my big poro into the fray. Mostly because of the champs I was playing.

I wanted to add that "To the King!" made for some dramatic moments when the last straggling survivor of a teamfight gone wrong would score a 10th poro hit on pursuing enemies, allowing freshly respawned allies to quickly rejoin the fight and completely turn the tables.

Drunk Rummate1/19/2015, 2:56:13 PM1 votes

Riven was so good in this mode. Wait until you land a poro on a squishy target, fly in and 1 shot them with your ult. From there you would still have cooldowns to escape since you didn't have to waste half of them to gapclose.

@L4T3NCY

I want to know who technically won the most games (top ten would be amazing). I played Sion the most because he was just so unbearably OP when played well.

My purrsonal musings....

  • I banned Kat, Akali, Blitzcrank, and Yi not because I was afraid of them (I was Sion). I banned them both because I didn't trust my team to use them right OR play against them right.

  • Next year^, the King needs some new code. Any Champion that did bonus damage to minions killed it way too fast for too little effort. Lucian's Ult alone could clear the regent faster than the full timing of the power. Towards the end of the game mode's stay, I was calling out Lucian bans before any assassins simply because it negated the point of the whole game mode. It's like if a single champion just happened to have an ability that could outright kill the Ascended, it goes against the spirit of the game mode.

  • After playing against a suicidal Karthus I realized just how dickish Sion was. I didn't stop playing him, but I could see why enemy teams were raging as I crushed their skulls beneath my stump.

  • The greatest feeling in the world is killing the enemy with a Poro Toss. For the Ace. And the King Summon. It happened more times than one would expect.

^ We'd better get Poro King again next year!! The blood price is too steep to not return it!!!!

Sona SONA! dash in with poro, do Sona things, and then gtfo with King Poro.

Also, Abducting people with Skarner Skarner OP

Galio is already very high-tier for ARAM without having that reliable and fluffy engage mechanism. Of course he was going to be a must pick/ban for the mode :P

I pretty much rode Galio and Lux to a 14-0 record in the mode while completing the Champion of the Poro icon requirements. As an avid ARAM player, it was interesting to watch a bunch of people who clearly weren't ARAM regulars figuring out the game mode. I did have two Sona games in there as well. I was perplexed when she wasn't banned, and then even moreso when the other team didn't pick her. I don't think either game lasted any more than 12 minutes...

All I can say is that I rocked as Leona on this mode (when I played her),but I evenly got bored & never played again.

Oh,and everyone died. The end.

Purodyuusaa1/17/2015, 12:56:58 AM1 votes

Around the time when the game mode first came out to live and almost nobody knew what they were doing, I threw myself into the fray as RekSai near the inhibitor and got Blitz-pulled under the nexus turrets. I naturally panicked but thankfully, the King had graced us with his presence so I jumped back to him to safety. Less than 10 seconds later, a few members of my team engaged near the nexus turrets and, being Rek'sai, I had a tunnel in the area. I ulted to a tunnel, made another one, and sniped two kills under their turrets.

It was one of those "it would've been cooler if I had planned it" moments.

I played against a Kamikaze Zyra one game; interesting strategy where the player would just launch Zyra in to point blank range, spam all her spells, and then use her passive to deal even more damage. Took me about half the game to realize what she was doing; I thought she was intentionally feeding/trolling at first. They ended up not winning but I think she ended up with the highest damage dealt on her team, if not the entire game EDIT: Just checked; they actually won that game, Zyra had most damage overall.

Observations:

  • Champs like Karthus, Galio and Amumu and, to a lesser extent, Nunu were really good at AOE when the Poro King wasn't around. Land snowball, get the Lee Sin Syndrome going, and zap 4-5 opponents in a huge AOE thing.
  • The most consistent four bans I saw were Katarina, Master Yi, Fizz and Akali. I guess resets and nonsense weren't something the players wanted, lol.
  • Sona and Soraka were absolute terrors on LPK, but that could be because both champs are absolute terrors on Murderbridge, pre 5.1.
  • The gap closers the poro toss provided helped a lot with meele champs like Fiora and Tryndamere.
